Yes, you are confused.
Both sides have their radicals. The right-wingers (Republican) and the left-wingers (Democrat).
The majority fall somewhere in the middle (conservative). Meaning their views are more moderate.
Whether you would label yourself as Republican or Democrat, would depend on how you feel on a number of social issues. Nothing more. Neither side is more inherently evil than the other.
The only difference is in how you would approach those issues, with the majority taking a common sense approach.

Democrat and Republican are the two major parties.
Conservative and Liberal are the two ends of the political spectrum. Typically Republicans come from the conservative side and democrats from the liberal, but this isn't always so. There are conservative democrats (Bob Casey) and liberal republicans (Lincoln Chafee).

The election might indicate a shift of the democratic party to the center. I think this would be bad news for both liberals and conservatives. Bad news for conservatives becasue it makes the democrats more likely to win and take the mainstream vote that republicans had previously gotten, pushing conservatives out unless they become more centrist. Bad news for liberals because it means that their party is less likely to listen to them and more likely to go for the conservative center.

There are conservative and liberal democrats the democrats that changed the balance of power are conservatives. Democrat does not mean left, that's what the Republicans try to make you think. Most Liberals are Democrats or Libertarians, but there are Liberal Republicans also, but they lost yesterday

Conservative and Liberal do not necessarily mean Republican and Democrat. Conservative and Liberal are ideologies while Republican and Democrat are political parties. Your ideology doesn't not need to agree with the prevalent sympathy in your party. Conservative is Right and Liberal is Left, those terms are synonymous.

There are two parties, but within the parties there are many different ways of thinking. I think a better word for it would be "moderate". Think of it like a seesaw, with some people on either side being closer to the middle, and some being further to the left or right.
OK that is confusing.

It usually refers to a democrat who is more conservative then most other democrats. So they are still on the left side of the scale, especially compared to most republicans, but they are on the right side of the left side. Okay, I just confused myself. lol
