When your party is in the majority, you get to choose the committee chairpersons. Every committee will have one more person from your party than the other. So you control the committees. A lot of the work of the Congress is done in committee. No vote is ever held on the floor until it gets passed by the appropriate committee.

If one party holds BOTH houses, then you have a lot less friction when the House and Senate get together to work out the differences in the House and Senate versions of a bill.

More dependable votes, but more important you get to pick the chairmen of the various committees. This is incredibly important because it gives you the power to control which bills get to the floor for a vote (you can just ignore the ones you don't like), and also the power to set committee policy based on your personal ideology.

You control each and every committee. You can open investigations when the president breaks a law or two (or twelve). You can pass legislation and then put the president on the spot to either sign it or veto it.
