Because the democrats have successfully pitched themselves as a party concerned about the poor. I admit to being cynical, I think many democrat leaders prefer to keep the poor poor (by addicting them to welfare and making them think they can't survive without it because of racism or whatever) so they have a steady source of votes. So they have no incentive to work on getting them off of welfare and in to the workforce.

I'm a republican which is probably no surprise.

Republicans have long tended to favor the rich and help make them richer at the expense of everyone else, especially the people who actually do all of the work.

Democrats used to be pro-union. It was Democrats who instituted Social Security; supported civil rights (except for the "Dixie-crats" of the south); were pro-environment; and were sometimes anti-war. In general, their values have been better-aligned with those of most Americans.

Currently, two changes have happened: the Democrats abandoned the bulk of the citizens in favor of the rich; rural poor have migrated to the Republican party.

The biggest divide now is urban vs. rural, rather than the older alliances detailed above.

If you look at the detailed electoral maps (precinct-by-precinct, not the Each State One Color maps) of the 2004 election, you'll see dull red, representing sparsely populated areas, punctuated by bright blue, representing cities -- even in the "reddest" states.

Oh! MY affiliation? As Will Rogers said, "I don't belong to an organized political party; I'm a democrat." though my real leanings are Green (far, far left -- I consider the Clintons to be right-wing; Bush I consider off the scale completely).

The corporations have had a golden era over the last 25 years. They have seen profits go up, the cost of living go up, the stocks go up?

However wages have become stagnant, jobs are being lost at an alarming rate, etc.

They are voting for a change. The dems have a history of more support for health care education and social programs.
The republicans are usually more interested in letting the market dictate everything. If you are poor this doesn't usually help you out as charity doesn't make large corporations money.

And Im Canadian who votes green party (because Im fed up with the same ol'every election).

The democratic party generally favors programs that assist the poor and has a more "we're all in this together" mentality. Republicans more or less would like to have fewer social programs and have people reap what they sow

Libertarian but tend to vote Democrat

This is a stale statistic, but I bet it is still the same.

One of the more glaring differences between the two groups is income. The average per capita income in the Blue states was $27,899 in 1998, versus $23,722 for the Red states, per the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Of the top 10 metropolitan areas with the highest per capita income, eight were from Blue states; the other two were from the highly contested state of Florida. Similarly, eight of the top 10 metro areas with the lowest income levels were from Red states. — ToddWasserman, 2002

I will try to stay away from my Republican views as much as possible. Democrats tend to aid the less fortunate people when Republicans have that core belief in helping yourself out. Also, conservatives think that it is the fault of the person who is poor and should fix it themselves. In some cases this is the truth.

To answer your initial question they vote democratic because Democrats support welfare.

is this a serious question.?....its the same song and dance the snake oil salesman and carpetbaggers had in the south...the poor are looking for a way out and the liberals feed on that..the reality check is there aint such thing as a free lunch and generally its working republicans that pay for failed schemes like the clinton health care fiasco....liberals never understand because there are an endless amount of schemes and naive people for them to bilk.

Because democrats work for the lower-income people, meanwhile republicans only care about rich people. That's why republicans have more money during campaigns.

All the freebies. I am a Republican who believes we should help the poor but only when they are willing to help themselves. To often they are perfectly capable of work or going to school, which is usually free, and choose not to. That is why I became Republican. I hate the you work hard so you can give it to me Democrat attitude.
