My fiance is deploying to Iraq in March, and I would love any sentimental gift idea's, so I can make this Valentine's Day as special as possible for him.

I just learned through the "military" Q&A that we have about 1.2 million military, of which no more than 330k are stationed overseas. (My concern was with whether we were being properly guarded here in the United States).
On 911 then we still had hundreds of thousands of military stationed here in the United States/ (Is that right)?
I'm just curious as to what these men and women were doing on 911? (serious question) -- I mean were they given any specific orders? It just seems (given post coverage information) that "scramble" jets weren't ordered that quickly and there was no info regarding the status of troops stateside.

Nobody in the Bush administration will come out and say that Muqtada Al-Sadr is an enemy of the US, and Bush has allowed him to be part ot the Iraqi government, and US troops were ORDERED not to kill him even though his Death Squads are killing innocent civilians and his Mahdi Army has killed many US marines in Najaf. His people control much of the government, the army, and they even chanted his name at the hanging of Saddam Hussein.

Why does someone who kills US marines get a free pass from Bush and the Republicans? Is it because he killed Cindy Sheehan's kid?

Osama allegedly hit our financial structure.
Is it at all possible that someone is laughing at us, while we spread our military might all over the world, leaving us here in the United States at the mercy of little or no defense on the homefront?

It seems very popular to have a fly over at a football game or other major event. I was just wondering how much does it cost and who pays for it? How does one even make a request? Can you get a fly over at any event as long as the fee is paid?

I've heard that if the gunpowder get's wet, it won't ignite. However, most bullets seem to have a very air tight seal, so it wouldn't seem that being immersed in water would negatively affect it's ability to fire. It also seems that the gun itself wouldn't be affected, because it's just a series of small moving parts. If you didn't take the gun apart, dry and oil each piece, it would get rusty and probably jam in the future, but if the gun was in the water, it seems like you could just pick it up out of the water, and it would be able to fire, no problem.
I'm not an expert with guns, but I did go deer and pheasant hunting when I was younger, and got training with a shotgun and .38 when I was in the Navy. My friends are mostly in the same boat, and they all say that a gun would "not" fire after it's been in the water. I would like to hear from an expert about this. It won't serve any practical application for me, I just see it happen in the movies all the time. Thanks

Over the weekend, I posed a question re Bush's 'surge 'and what I believed to be its "two-fold purpose". Many disagreed.
But it looks as though I was right. The 'surge' is merely a smokescreen for the US's ultimate plan.

The Guardian
January 15, 2007
"Iran target of US Gulf military moves, Gates says"

Increased military activity in the Gulf is aimed at Iran's "very negative" behaviour, the Bush administration said today.
The defence secretary, Robert Gates, told reporters that the decision to deploy a Patriot missile battalion and a second aircraft carrier to the Gulf in conjunction with a "surge" of troops in Iraq was designed to show Iran that the US was not "overcommitted" in Iraq. His remarks followed tough comments on Iran at the weekend from other senior US officials. Such remarks have fueled speculation that the US is softening up US public for possible action against Tehran. It is also a repudiation of one of key recommendations of Iraq Study Group....(see cont'd)

I'd like to hear from a Vietnam Vet's relative or someone that knows one to see whether this is true or not. My dad's a Vietnam War Vet and he told me that all the troops he was with were spat on. He was honorably discharged in 1968. I need some back-up support here because some f'd up lunatic is trying to say my dad's lying (although he's not).

I am a 17 year old from Russia and I always wanted to be an officer in the army. I don't want to join the US army because then I would feel like a traitor. My great grandfather was a leutenant in the Red army during WW2, grandfather a colonel, and father a captain in Afganistan.
I can't move back to Russia cause the american high school doesn't count there. What should I do?
