I am a 17 year old from Russia and I always wanted to be an officer in the army. I don't want to join the US army because then I would feel like a traitor. My great grandfather was a leutenant in the Red army during WW2, grandfather a colonel, and father a captain in Afganistan.
I can't move back to Russia cause the american high school doesn't count there. What should I do?

I want to serve in the Russian military not because of the pay, but because of the prestige and wanting to serve my country.

Look, though I'm an ardent Egyptian Sunni Muslim in Egypt, I advise you to join the American army. There's no treachery here; as the Red army was to defend communism, which was at that time the preferred economic system the vast majority of the people desired; as it stood in the face of the tyranny of capitalism. It wasn't until the West began to take the benefits of communism and redesign their economy into a "mixed" one that communism became undesireable.
I advise you to join the American army. A lot of Russians are there. America now stands as a true leader of the free world. Though not as democratic as most of Western Europe, frankly you'll feel 100% American once you dissolve in the society. No "foreigner" or "non-citizen" quotes shall be slammed at you.
However, make sure not to waste yourself in vain. I no that military orders from superiors are not to be questioned by the subordinates (not to mention the orders of the current insane supreme command of the US armed forces!)...so perhaps you may try joining the Navy; it would be better. If you could swim, then I advise for that branch. There, you'll be more prestigious, having better pay, and I think the Navy uniform will suite you more. Besides, I don't think America could plunge her navy in some stupid war, so the navy won't suffer like the army or the marines, or even the airforce!
Therefore the best thing for you (according to my opinion) would be the navy; if not, then the army.
PS: Don't bother yourself with Russian evaluation. The great days of Russia are over...and forever!

Throughout history, soldiers have provided their services to other countrys and not thought of as "traitors." The issues between the former Soviet Union and US were based upon mistrust between the countries after WWII. Like others, I don't understand why one would think they were a traitor to their country just because they join a military service to fight and maintain the freedoms that we now have. Don't forget, it was those before us that gave THEIR lives to insure the freedoms we now have. Being in the military isn't about the other "bad guy" but about ideologies and democracy, fair and equal treatment, and pursuit of happiness! If you are looking at a specific military to join...consider what that country is offering. Is it the same as your own country?

You live here in the USA. Why be ashamed to join here?
The U.S. is not at war with Russia, so why the worry?
But, remember, if you do join the milatary, there's a good chance you'll be sent to Iraq and never make it back. Why not study what you want to study in college and go from there?

Why would you want to join the Russian army? The gov't there can't even pay their troops. They can't keep the maintenance on their equipment, their ships are rusting at the piers. Being you have lived here, you'd be ostracized by other Russian military.
