I can't remember a time when you would see more than 2 per year. Seems like there have been about 8 in the past 6 months.

I agree with the previous respondent... it seems to me it's more a matter of the media reporting on these accidents.

Watching CNN right now, IF it was a terror incident for this train wreck & fire in Kentucky... it would make FAR more sense to do this in a more URBAN location to cause more damage and possible injury. I mean IF I were a terrorist I'd pop a traincar load of ammonia in an urban/suburban area... you'd have thousands of deaths.

Then again, I KNOW Homeland Security WATCHES our Railroad right-of-ways. I was stopped and questioned for taking photos... I'm a model railroad geek.

I went to the National Transportation Safety Board website (http://www.ntsb.gov/default.htm) and simply couldn't find an easily available database for Railroad Accidents/Incidents. Nor could I find specific data on the Federal Railroad Administration's site

I'm not claiming to know the answer - but I wonder how much of this has to do with the fact that more media outlets have faster access to video feed and local reports than they did in the past.??

I would think it is more because the railroad companies are not taking care of the tracks.
