Though America has the most powerful military force ever, its command structure is headed by a civillian; the Secretary of Defense. I know of some SecDefs being ex-military generals (like George Marshal)...but how could other civillians with little or even no military background lead the greatest military machine ever?

I could make a guess that the SecDef is a strategist only; with the tactics being in the hands of the 4-stars and 3-stars generals. Yet again, what are the functions of the Deputy SecDef, the Secretary of the Army, Sec of the Airforce and Sec of the Navy; along with their undersecretaries; provided that all are civillians????

I've even heard that the Pentagon has civillian police as part of the security policy due to the presence of myriads of civillians there!

I completely agree with the "civillian control over the military" statute...but is it practical and realistic? Or would consecutive military setbacks lead to a change within this policy?

I think overall we will save lives by adding more troops so that we can overwhelm them and take care of the conflict alot faster. I know that it means putting more troops in danger but if I were still in the military I would be proud to go and finish this.

Does anyone know where I can find an up-to-date list of similiarities? All the articles that I can find online were published in 2004 or 2005 and don't account for the past 18 months. Or, if anyone has any insight of their own, that would be appreciated too.

Going To Iraq?

I believe so.

There is no greater gift than one man give his life for another. If we believe in what the Bible tells us, war is inevitable occurance which has long been and shall be as long as we are here on earth. War must sometimes be implimented. The Jihad brutally killed our people, friends, neighbors, sons and daughters in the terror strike on the Twin Towers & other US places on that awful day of 9/11. We CAN'T FORGET THAT! Saddam might be gone, Osama never found, but Jihad is alive and literally EVERYWHERE, even in our homeland as our neighbors & so-called friends.

I am NOT saying that all Iraq people or Musslims are bad. What I am saying is that Jihad has an agenda to take the WORLD over for Allah. Their agenda is NOT PEACE. And this war is not merely do fight the people who followed Saddam or another, it is to fight and destroy Jihad at it's center base.

Now again I ask you ... Should I support my brother's decition to enlist and sign up for Iraq?

I was in the Navy and all, but I've never heard this term before.

Does it apply to Army folks?

Is it basically inactive reserve?

Finally, is it a bad thing if they are abandoning the time limit?

Thanks guys and gals.

When we compare the Iraq War and the Vietnam War, I think Iraq might be a worse mark on American history. Of course, many, many more people were killed in Vietnam. But Iraq has caused all sorts of civilian deaths, and it was a war that was devised on premises that were pretty much false.

Its true that Iraq did refuse to allow U.N inspections, but the intelligence may have been manipulated or mischaracterized by the White House. And it was this intelligence that led to the decision to go to war. The planning itself for the war was, obviously, deeply flawed. Nobody in the White House listened to those who said the 'the peace' would take so long to win, or be so costly in both lives, time, and money.

So I ask you, which of these two wars will be the greater opprobrium in American history, and why?
