There are good silencers made for the 1911 pistols. You will need to make or buy a good quality one to work well as the large opening required to let the 45 caliber bullet pass through also lets much of the noise through. Most ammo available for the 45ACP is subsonic, some of the lighter bullets will exceed 1100 fps and make a small cracking noise when shot, but the muzzle blast is always much louder than any sonic boom.
Using full power ammo in any suppressor is no problem as most silencers are built to handle the maximum power available to the gun it is fitted to. Rifles are also suitable as suppressed platforms even when using full power supersonic ammunition. They tame the recoil and can reduce the muzzle noise by over a factor of 100 (20 decibels).
Silencers (a marketing gimmick and legal term) are not banned by any federal law. They are strictly controlled though. Dealers, importers and manufacturers are required to be a Special Occupational Taxpayer (SOT) and pay $1000 per year tax to sell, buy, make or import. Unlicensed civilians are allowed to own, buy, sell and make suppressors without any license or permit. To buy one, an ATF form 4 is used; it is sent in by the dealer after you obtain your local sheriff’s signature and pay the one-time $200 tax. To make one, just fill out the ATF form 1 (also with sheriff sig) and send it in with the $200 tax and wait for it to be sent back approved before you make it.
Suppressors are legal for civilian ownership in 36 states of the union. Some states have restrictions for owners, such as Washington State that bans use, but not ownership. Check out www.subguns.com for classified ads and check out prices for silencers. They are expensive compared to other countries because they are built to last long. www.silencertests.com is a good place for building advice and reviews of products.

Anyone with machinist experience can make a silencer for just about anything. But, there are two things that you need to know up front.
1. A silienced wepon does not fire a regular bullet. If you were to use a siliencer with a full powered round, at best it would destroy the silencer in a few shots. At worst, it could blow up in your face. A silenced weapon uses a sub-sonic round, and is made for up-close and personal shooting.
2. Outside of the military and law enforcement, having a silencer is illegal, and you can go to big boy prison if you get caught with it. I know several individuals that went to jail for making them, and, for the life of me, I can't figure out why Average Joe would need one, other than the rush of being able to say that you've got one.

Sure. Just takes a little gunsmithing. But I'm not so sure that the 1911 is the best choice for a quite operation pistol.
