Law Enforcement & Police - October 2007

[Selected]: All categories Politics & Government Law Enforcement & Police

I live in a village in North Yorkshire, UK.

Every day vehicles tear through the village despite a 30 mph limit.

The County Council did a traffic survey showing 70% of vehicles passing through the village do so breaking the speed limit. They have known about this for over a year, they have done nothing and do not reply to emails.

THE POLICE have had copies of the report, know of the law breaking every day, do nothing and dont reply to emails.

My County Councillor has not even replied to my emails.

In the last 12 months numerous accidents have happened with vehicles travelling too fast and leaving the road.

Children walk up and down the road (without a footpath)to get the school bus.

Pedestrians have to walk in the road.

THE POLICE,COUNTY COUNCIL AND COUNTY COUNCILLOR have individually and collectively done NOTHING to sort this out and have shown nothing but apathy.

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?

This is something I've always wondered. There always seems to be more cops out at the end of the month then at any other time. Is there a set number of tickets they need to issue—or is this just a myth? Just a thought. Thanks.

If there are 2 or 3 cars all speeding, either vertically in a line right after the other, or horizontally across several lanes on an expressway lets say... who does the policeman stop??

A sober driver was driving me and my friends- we were all drunk. He got pulled over because he was swerving- the cop thought he was drunk.

He came and asked us if we were drinking, and we all said no. He said he could smell booze in the car (which was complete bs, it had been hours since we were drinking). He took out the driver and breathalyzed him twice, and each time he blew a zero. The cop came back and told us that if we were lying to him about drinking, we could get sent to jail, so we told him the truth, and he breathalyzed us, and we got minors.

Is this legal? Could we go to jail for lying to a cop and is he allowed to breathalyze US, even though our driver was sober?

I was in a car and we got pulled over. The driver had been drinking (yes, stupid on my part...was not completely aware he had been drinking so much). The cop asked if i had been drinking, (I had, and said yes) and he gave me an underage consumption (understandable) and a PUBLIC INTOXICATION. Can I get a public intox for just sitting in a car? I wasnt yelling or anything, I actually didnt say a word unless the cop asked me a question. Any comments? I have a lawyer to fight it and all, but just wondering what others think. Thanks!

i just received a letter on Saturday that i owe 762 dollars for not paying 30 tolls from 06/2006 through 12/2006. Originally the cost would have been 22 dollars for the unpaid tolls but they charged 20 dollars for each toll as a fee which comes out to 762 dollars which is crazy. i had an Ipass but i never realized i was out of money on it until like a week after i ran out. Meanwhile i was still going through all those tolls. Do you think that they would cut me a break? The letter they sent me is kinda harsh. They said they don't accept payment plans, they don't negotiate, etc and that I have to pay this amount in two weeks or I get my license suspended. They did however say I could have a hearing.

Anyone think its possible to get off all these fines?? Or have you yourself?

I live in a dorm immediately adjecent to my campus but it is not affiliated with it. It is set up so that each bothroom is shared by 2 rooms (like a jack-and-jill bathroom). My roommate and suitemates (the ones who share our bathroom) drink alcohol in the suite joined by our bathroom (not my suite). I know they drink alcohol over there, but they have never come to drink in our suite. Is it illegal for me to know that they are drinking underage in their suite? They all got drinking tickets while I was gone once, and if I was here, would I have gotten a ticket too?

I need to know!!

What the heck? I got this speeding ticket (first time) in King County, WA. driving 77 on a 60. She (the officer) put me down as 65 though. But the thing is, I looked all over on the ticket, and the penalty cost is blank. How am I supposed to pay this?

Hey, I'm about to graduate from college with a military science degree and I am a member of Army ROTC. When I do graduate I have deciced, because of my girlfriend, not to go active duty but rather reserve. I have the grades and PT scores to basically choose what I want to do, and my question is what would my chances be to become swat as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve Military Police?

Does it undermine your trust in the cop when he could easily have made a tape?

What if he says he does not make tapes because people are less likely to talk freely when they see a recorder?

Would it make a difference if there was another cop present, but he could not confirm what the first cop says the defendant admitted?

I am interested in how jurors sort out circumstances like this. Some people think a cop will be believed rather than the defendant. Other's think it is very suspicious when a cop sets up circumstances where it his word against the defendant.

.....because I find getting an intimate body search such an erotic experience?

WPC Bertha Bosomworth has fingers like pork sausages and she's very slow and methodical - plus if I squint hard enough she looks like Steve McFadden.

It's the only fun I get these days, but I've heard the duty officer muttering about "wasting police time".

It's not so wrong, is it?

I've heard that if the cop doesnt show up for court that the ticket can be dropped. Is this true?

Hey guys. I got a question. The other day I got a speeding ticket for doing 76 in a 50. Now first of all when the cop clocked me he was heading the opposite direction driving at about 50. Aren't cops not able to do that? Second, the cop didn't give me a fine, instead its a summons to go to court. But where it says where to sign agreeing that I will show up to court the cop never had me sign. Does this make the ticket invalid or is it just a simple clerical mistake?

Do you agree with how the law is being run theese days, specificly police. Do you agree with the police, sometimes, all the time, nearly never? Do you think police are doing their job the way it was intended or slightly slacking? All answers are looked at and a good story or refrence is always a good defense. We debated this in English and alot of the students in our class said that Police are giving more speeding and drug busts than actually being the role citizins, for example "I saw a cop pulling someone over for their broken tail light, and less than a mile away is someone broken down." Im not sure if that was a good refrence but there were alot of enlighting things and I was wondering what you guys thought, ages are aprreciated :-D thanks.

We have a safe with carrying handle. If for any reason we were issued a warrant for our home or if the safe was in the car, are the cops allowed to search it? Even if I don't have the key with me?

My little brother was busted with marijuana. He told the cop he didnt have anything and when he got searched they found it on him. He had like 1 oz of it on him. The cop was alone when he searched him and didnt read him his rights when he was arrested. He was told he has to go in front of a juvenile judge. This will be his second time in front of this judge. The last time was about 3 years ago for fighting. He got put on probation then. We live in Pa if anyone knows Pa laws. What's the worse that could happen to him? Could he get out of it bc he wasnt read his rights?
