Law Enforcement & Police - October 2007

Like Killing people in high speed chases where the suspect might have a warrant for some simple infraction. Or tasing a woman for not getting out of her car fast enough. It is so odd to me that Law enforcement officers do the very things that the common citizenry is forbidden to do. It's Like the Government using WAR to Bring about PEACE. Am I wrong? If so, Why?

Is racking a pump shotgun really an effective way to encourage an intruder to leave, or does it just serve to give away your location and lose the element of surprise?

I just need few things clearified:

1. What exactly does cooperative justice mean?
2.When did the issue of retributive vs. cooperative justice arise and why did it come to the attention of the public?

Thanks so much!

I realized my new neighborhood is insanely high crime. I have been sleeping with a baseball bat next to my bed, and also a Glock pistol in the nightstand.

I don't know what my rights are, I am confused with watching too many cop shows. But if someone breaks into my house in the middle of the night, do I have the right to shoot the person? What if they die?

Or what if I just decide to clobber them with a baseball bat and wait for the police to arrive. Can I get charged with battery? (No pun intended).

I'd like to know your personal perspective.don't look up the statistics.just give an estimate right now out of 10 ratio regarding how many male versus female criminals(hardcore criminals-murderers/etc, not the petty crimes) that you think there are.example 1 out of 10 male so that's 9 out of 10 females, etc and rank according to what you think...and state why you came to that conclusion.why is one gender more prone to committing crimes than the other? thanks.

I'm not sure myself, other similar countries with lower crime rates arm their police (france spain) but i doubt they're as well policed as the UK so they don't get investigated every time they raise their weapons. Also, is it needed with such good armed responce units who use better guns and are better trained. personally, i think its better to have these guys around to deal with the situation but are they're enough of them with increased gun crime. also, places where you might need a gun - airports, Buckingham palace, Mcdonalds tend to have armed officers. my american mates think its amazing our police don't carry guns but they also say they have more respect for british police because of it. obviously though america is even more dangerous than newcastle on a friday night so they need guns.

i have this lunatic in town that is out to get me but he is very smart, and knows the system. he yells at me in middle of busy streets, he calls my house in middle of the night, he threw a can of paint on my car, and twice in middle of the night he smashed the front window of my house. he always runs away before we can catch him, but sometimes he calls to threaten before he strikes. we have reported everything to the police but as he is smart he knows not to get caught or do anything too extreme. how can i stop this guy? i don't have the time and money to waste with the legal system, and anyways they will not be able to do to much based on the nature of the crimes. this guy does not have a car and lives in a apartment so it is hard to do something back without getting caught, (i don't want to be arrested )or even hire someone to do something because he will know that i hired him.

Today as it was a nice day where I live I was sitting outside my flat with my boyfriend. My cat was running around doing cat things when a woman walking her two dogs decided to let them off to chase my cat (she obviously didnt see me). The dogs chased my cat under a car and one of them (they were both terriers) was biting his back legs and tail. I pulled the dogs off as this woman just stood there and watched. I was screaming at her to get her dogs back on their lead and she was just saying that dogs were always off their leads round there.

The dogs then chased my cat into my block and one of the dogs peed to mark its territory.

The woman did nothing. I told her I was going to call the pound and she told me I had no right to do that.

What can I do legally as I am not having this woman set her dogs on my cat each time he is out.

My friend got mixed up in a fraud conspiracy thing 12 yrs ago in the casino where he worked in england but moved to Italy to visit family before the police ever questioned him. The other two went to magistrates then to high court, got 400 fine each. The amount scammed from the customers was only 50quid,but the gaming board prosicuted anyway. This was back in 1995.
My friend has been back to the uk since and funnily enough on one trip back in 2002 he got stopped for speeding and because he was returning back to italy the police explained they had to arrest him to bring the court date forward for the speeding offence, nothing was said about what happened in 1995.
Does this mean the original case was closed and hes not on the list as his name wouldve come up when he was arrested and interviewed for the speeding offence????
He wants to move back to england but doesnt want to look over his shoulder over something stupid he did 12 years ago.

First I think that Seat Belts are a GREAT thing, I would never drive a car (Which is My RIGHT...not a priveldge as the bureaucrats love to tell us) without one. ALL children should be required to wear a seat-belt.

Here's the Problem: This is nothing but a protect-me-from-myself law that raises millions of dollars each year...in my State alone they STOLE from Americans 53.2 MILLION in fines. LISTEN or you'll miss this: Insurance rates continued to climb at 3.2% as they have done for the past 45 years...ZERO Change...AUTO wrecks are down in my State 1.4%, fatalities as up 1.2% as they they do EVERY YEAR even before they enacted Seat-Belt laws........NOTHING HAS CHANGED...can you hear me..NOTHING>>>....EXCEPT one thing..52 MILLION DOLLARS.............52 MILLION DOLLARS.....52 MILLION they took in in FINES.........SEAT BELT LAWS DON'T WORK...GUESS who making the BIG MONEY????

Folks wear your belt it's common sense...if you need BIG-BROTHER to prtect you...Don't Drive!

My father hates the man I have been dating. I told him I would stop but I haven't. He has hired a PI to follow me so he can find out if I am lying to him or not. I know he has done this because he has told me things he found out, and it is all true.

How can I tell exactly when I am being followed and how? Is there a way to throw the PI off the scent? Please help. Thank you.

Reading many answers on here it makes me smile the amount of people who believe the police need a warrant to enter a property (applies to UK only). If they have a belief that either a wanted person/person suspected of comitting an offence/stolen property immediately having been left or that they need to enter to protect life or limb then they may enter without a warrant under powers afforded under PACE 1984. With someone in custody for a theft offence they can still enter a property without a warrant to search for stolen goods. A warrant is only needed for pre planned things and not all the time. Is it people's over belief in that everything you see on tv is true and that the UK is the same as the US?
