What is she protecting. If it is her home and family, she will not be carrying it outside the home, why would she want a hand gun?
The easiest to use and the most scary thing for a home invader to see is a shot gun. A .410 shotgun with a 18.5 inch barrel (barley legal) looks very scary. It is easy to handle and takes very little getting used to. Shot placement is not that important, it is very very hard to hit what you are aiming at with a handgun, and very easy to hit at least partially with a shotgun.
The .410 does not have a lot of kick yet it can do an excellent job at convincing a bad guy to get far away. A multi shot pump is reliable and you have easy follow up shot if you have to shoot. Even a Glock needs more maintenance then a simple shotgun, other hand pistols need a lot of maintenance. Once a bad guy sees the shotgun most get away as fast as they can anyway.
I have seen a huge number of misfires by civilians and police when they do not maintain their pistols, semi autos are the worst. A gun that does not fire when you need it is worthless.
If she is going to conceal carry I would recommend something like a lightweight S & W 642, Tauras makes a fine cheaper copy. It has only 5 shots but it is a reliable revolver. It has no exposed hammer so it does not get caught up in pocket or purse. Equipped with grip Crimson Trace laser sights and any fool can shoot it, even with the sights they may not hit, it is still a handgun

She needs to go to a range that will let her shoot them first. In my area we have ranges that sell guns too. You can rent and shoot everything you like, then decide what suits you best.
As for a small woman that has very limited experience, I would go with a small frame, hammerless revolver. Very small and simple to use. Point and shoot.
Let me also suggest that she take some handgun defense classes. All the guns the world are worthless if you don't know what you're doing.

A couple of years ago, I tried an 8-shot aluminum body .22 revolver, I believe it was made by Smith & Wesson.
It was very light gun with very little recoil to it.
If your friend is petite or a small woman, I would recommend something like that. The lady who was shooting it, barely weighed 110 lbs and she easily handled the weapon.

FIRST, she needs to get a good training course. Just having a gun doesn't make you safe if you don't know what your doing and are unwilling to use it if it is necessary.
Nothing under a 9 MM or .38 Special.

Go to a gun shop and talk with them. Tell them what she is looking for. Ask about classes. They are more than happy to help.

Taurus PT140 Millenium Pro. Great gun, good firepower. Girls can handle it (not to big for their hands). Compact and concealable.

A glock. I have had mine for over 15 years. It's easy to maintain, accurate and have never had a misfire or jam while shooting factory loads. 20 years law enforcement.
