Dozens of suspected illegal immigrants were taken into custody by federal agents Thursday morning during a raid in Scranton.

Agents went to a company that makes equipment for the military, rounding up about one-third of the people there and taking them into custody.

Employees said they heard a knock at the door at North American Manufacturing, stopping production. The company makes field and ammunition packs and cots for the U.S. military.

Police blocked the street and federal agents went in about 8:15 a.m. Company officials estimate they took out about 40 of their 120 first-shift workers.

Antwan Garner is an American citizen. He was inside putting together a military cot when it all happened.

"They asked for all the American citizens to go to one side of the room and all the immigrants to the other side, and they did a little test looking at people working. A lot of things went down today. This was crazy," Garner said.

Suspected illegal immigrants were loaded into a waiting van.

Many suspected illegal immigrants were led out by Immigration and Customs enforcement agents.

Several family members and friends watched as the workers were led into a waiting bus and van. George Guevara's mother was not taken away but his cousins were.

"They're not criminals you know, just working. Me, I've been here for seven years, you know. I'm legal in this country but either way, they look at us the same way, you know, whether we're legal or not legal," Guevara said.

North American Manufacturing officials said some of the employees taken into custody were long-time workers. They said they were shocked to see immigration agents arrive and said they never expected anything like this,
especially because the company has checked the identification and social security cards of all of their 135 workers.

The immigration office in Washington D.C. has not commented about the number of arrests or about any charges.

The plant manager at North American Manufacturing Plant said he has heard from his employees that all the women who were taken into custody have been released but the men were taken on a bus to the immigration office in Philadelphia.

At this point, there is no word if they are coming back.http://www.wnep.com/Global/story.asp?S=7265058&nav=menu158_2

.to live instead of flooding our borders, in violation of US Immigration Laws? Please explain why you have to be here? Why our phones should be in Spanish or signs in stores? it's crazy. Because in Mexico, you certainly don't recipricate.
It would be better if you had to be here that you chose to do it not as law breakers, but as genuine honest citizen seeking people, don't you think?

Senator Barack Obama
“Today is another missed opportunity in the battle to solve the immigration crisis in this country. The immigration debate has been wrought with the politics of division and fear, and been exploited by some politicians, blocking the real reform we need. Today's vote proves that we need to do more to transcend these divisions – especially to provide solutions to help the most vulnerable in our society. I will continue to work with Senators Durbin, Hagel, Lugar and Kennedy on this issue, and will fight to bring this legislation back for another vote as soon as possible.”http://illinoischannel.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!B0DB128F5CD96151!2718.entry

The U.S. government is vowing to spend $1.4 billion to help Mexico battle violent drug gangs, but the money will be largely wasted if authorities here don't cut the ties between police forces and organized crime, security analysts say.

U.S. and Mexican officials on Monday announced the so-called "Merida Initiative," which U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Tony Garza described as "the single most aggressive undertaking ever to combat Mexican drug cartels."

The plan's success, however, may hinge on whether it includes an effective strategy to tackle the corruption that has corroded large parts of Mexico's local and federal police forces.

If it does not, Mexico will simply go from having "a corrupt and badly equipped police force to a corrupt and well-equipped police force," said Jorge Chabat, a Mexican national security analyst and drug expert.

The latest example of how deep-pocketed drug traffickers have warped local law enforcement came earlier this month when agents detained 25 federal police officers in the northern border state of Tamaulipas on suspicion of providing protection for the Gulf drug cartel.

Erubiel Tirado, a national security and diplomacy expert at Mexico City's Iberoamericana University, said the Merida plan's emphasis on equipment and training of Mexican forces sends a clear message.

"There's no confidence in our institutional infrastructure, which is precisely the origin of the crisis we're going through," he said.

President Bush asked Congress on Monday to approve funding for the plan's first $500 million installment. If approved, it would make Mexico the second biggest recipient of U.S. security and anti-drug aid after Colombia, which has received $5 billion under Plan Colombia. Critics of the new plan have dubbed it "Plan Mexico."

Unlike the Colombia initiative, though, the Mexico proposal does not involve putting U.S. troops on Mexican soil. Instead, it would pay for such things as helicopters and surveillance aircraft, "nonintrusive inspection equipment" and drug-sniffing dogs.

Mexican opposition politicians have nevertheless raised concerns that it would violate Mexican sovereignty and pledged to oppose Mexico's plan to spend $7 billion over three years to the fight against organized crime.

Foreign Secretary Patricia Espinosa was to appear before the Senate later Wednesday to provide lawmakers with details on the initiative.http://www.star-telegram.com/448/story/279143.html

How they got here whether it was legally or not.
Who they are in regards to a criminal background
Are on drugs
Are thiefs
Have some horrible disease
No money to support themselves and/or their family

Do we give a hand up or a good kick in the rear end to those who come here expecting everything to be given to them. How about we take away all social programs to anyone that cant prove they are a citizen or papers that show they came here legally?

It’s a long-standing concern of border-security proponents: Illegal immigration and smuggling cause significant environmental damage, says a report recently released by the Bureau of Land Management. The annual report for fiscal 2006 details efforts by the bureau and partner organizations to mitigate the impacts on lands in Southern Arizona. Deborah E. Stevens, public affairs specialist for the Bureau of Land Management, said the purpose of the report is to build public awareness and get attention to the issue. “Tremendous numbers of people and organizations are doing work. We kind of want to let people know what we are doing and what kind of project work is going on,” said Shela McFarlin, special assistant for international programs for the bureau. More than 225,000 pounds of trash related to smuggling were collected, according to a press release on the report. Another 900,000 pounds of litter that resulted from both smuggling and illegal dumping were removed. About 24 million pounds of trash cover thousands of acres of public and tribal lands. The most visible items are drinking bottles, clothing and food refuse. Illegal roads and trails cause damages to resources on the landscape. There are also damages to infrastructure, such as gates, ranges, fences and water tanks. Also as a result of the project, more than 75 projects were completed, ranging from cattleguard repair to re-vegetation. The project also involved rehabilitating more than 100 routes and maintaining 26 miles of roads. Also removed were more than 130 abandoned vehicles and 1,902 abandoned bicycles. Removal of the vehicles, which are often burned, is difficult and expensive because care must be exercised to avoid further damage to the environment. Here in New York State, Gov. Eliot Spitzer has ordered the Department of Motor Vehicles to issue undocumented/illegal immigrants driver licenses if they have a passport or proof of origin. He has made the argument that the policy will bring many of the 1 million undocumented/illegal immigrants "out of the shadows" and into documentation. Supporters argue that it will also reduce car insurance. Opponents argue it rewards illegal behavior, jeopardizes security (the federal Transportation Safty Administration requires identification to fly) and will only encourage more undocumented/illegal immigration into the state. What do you think?

My daughter's father was deported last week due to a felony he committed in 2002. He has barely been in her life since this, although he says he loves her and would anything for her. Yeah, right? I am ok with the deportation. First of all he was an illegal (although he was adopted by an American family at age 11) he was still not here legally. My current husband has been in her life since age 2 (she is now 7) and we would love for him to adopt her as his own. I know her real father would never give consent for this, although he has not been there for her. I talked to the attorney general's office today and he owes me $32,000 in past due child support, which I will probably never see. Now that he is across the border there is nothing that can be done to enfoce this. Does this make my daughter eligible to be adopted? Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

I'm desperate.
Seriously desperate.
I'm 20 years old, still live with my parents.
They have so many depts it's unbelievable, even after personal bankrupcy (since about half the debt is to family and friends and we want to repay them).

For last umm 17 years maybe, my dad has been giving math & programming private lessons in our home. He always preferred to work at home. But the thing is, he only has like a lesson or two per day... which is really not enough!!!
He had a couple of odd low-paying jobs from what I remember, each lasting for about a year or two. He never, and I mean never, got a job according to his profession: software programmer and tester. He is very smart. He has three degrees and real potential to make a lot of money. I don't know what is wrong with him. My money from work and credit cards go to the family or my college tuition. My mom is going mad and wants a divorce from my dad because it feels like he will never get a real job even though he always promises to

Six illegal immigrants arrested at Qualcomm

San Diego:

Six undocumented Mexican immigrants were arrested today by U.S. Border Patrol agents at Qualcomm Stadium, after a report that they were stealing food and water meant for evacuees, according to spokesman Damon Foreman.

San Diego police responded to a call about alleged theft from the evacuation center and encountered six people in a van who didn't speak English and didn't have California driver's licenses, Foreman said. The police officers called the Border Patrol, who arrived at the stadium and made the arrests, he said. Foreman said the immigrants admitted they were Mexican citizens and that they were stealing.

Border Patrol agents are not looking for illegal immigrants at the center but will continue responding to police calls for assistance.......
