A Fiance Visa is good for 6 months and will cost around £500, and is not refundable in the event of refusal. But think you are jumping the gun a little. Before this Visa is given a very strict criteria has to be satisfied.See the British Embassy website for more info on this. That will give you an insight into what may be required, but the Embassy will ask for a Police Report and a Medical Certificate in addition to the recomendations.

A UK fiance visa is valid six months - but as you're getting all different answers here, don't take my word for it, but check http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1018721067257
Within the six months, the non-Brit must come to the UK and register the marriage. They can then apply for a two-year spouse visa. Once they have the spouse visa, but not before, they will be allowed to work.

It is for 90 days. A marriage must take place within that time frame, or the fiance goes back to their own country.
