Hi.
I am planning a trip to the States around the next of next year. I am 20 years old, will be 21 in June '09. I wanted to get a temporary work visa so that I could work in bars and such along my travels.
Would I need to apply for a green card, or is there a temp work agreement that could be sorted out? I am Australian.

Thanks.

I see this alleged by a number of pro-illegals here in the IMMIGRATION forum.

My answer:

1) The land was originally populated by Native Americans. They arguably have first claim, not the Mexicans

2) Huge chunks of the U.S. southwest were at various times claimed by Spain, Russia, Britain, France and the U.S., and was almost completely unsettled and unexplored until after 1800.

3) Mexico won its independence from Spain in 1821. Texas seceded from Mexico in 1835, so Mexico only had that territory for barely 15 years.
Moses Austin was granted land in Texas in 1821, the same year.

4) Texans (many of whom were ethnic Mexicans) would have been content to remain part of Mexico, if they were free to police their own state, instead of the Mexican army.

5) Mexico, against the advice of Britain and France to use diplomatic means to settle the Texas border dispute in 1846, attacked the U.S., giving the U.S. provocation to fight Mexico and later declare peace terms.

What is wrong with us?For goodness sakes we're all Americans. Why are we telling each other to leave this country just because we have different views on how to handle illegal and legal immigration?Don't you think this would be the time to pull together and act like a nation instead of children? What do you think, has it divided us that far?

'Guest worker' plan assailed
Ritter gives it right back to GOP critics of union stance
Help wanted in Colorado — from Mexico
Idea sounds 'real good' to Brighton farm family
By April M. Washington, Rocky Mountain News
August 25, 2007
Republican lawmakers Friday assailed a bipartisan proposal to open a recruitment office in Mexico to attract seasonal workers, saying it risks making Colorado a magnet for illegal immigrants.
"This is sending the wrong message," said Republican Sen. Greg Brophy, a farmer from the Eastern Plains. "We need to be more creative than just opening up a state-sponsored employment office in Juarez. That's throwing in the towel and saying, 'Come on in.' "

Rep. Marsha Looper, R-Calhan, and Sen. Abel Tapia, D-Pueblo, are floating a plan to recruit seasonal legal workers in Mexico to help Colorado farmers who are struggling to find help to bring in crops. The legislators initially called it a "guest worker" program, but only the federal government can grant visas to foreign workers. The proposal is intended only to help expedite existing visa programs, not create a new one, as some critics have said.

The plan is preliminary, and talks just have gotten under way about introducing legislation in January.

Senate Republicans called the proposal an attempt by Democrats to backslide from recent legislative efforts to stem the flow of illegal immigrants.

"Unless the state is prepared to spend tens of millions of dollars to keep tabs on guest workers to make sure they don't overstay their visas, then this is a bad idea," said Sen. Josh Penry, R-Fruita.

In truth, the proposal came from a Republican.

Looper, a GOP House freshman, approached Tapia about co-sponsoring a bill.

Looper could not be reached for comment Friday, but said earlier she urged her GOP colleagues to put aside partisan politics and do what's best for Colorado's agricultural market.

Looper has been pressured this week by fellow Republicans to back away from the proposal.

Rep. Frank McNulty, R-Highlands Ranch, credited Looper for thinking outside the box, but argues that state-sponsored recruitment of migrant workers only would foster illegal immigration and further weaken attempts to secure the nation's southern border.

"This goes a step too far," he said. "Sometimes you got to beat people back into the box. She has some high hurdles to get through before she gets to the border."

Tapia defended the measure Friday as a creative and sound idea. He said neither he nor Looper is trying to lure undocumented workers or create a pathway to citizenship.

Tapia and Looper have said that the state's crackdown on illegal immigration has caused migrant workers to bypass Colorado, leaving farmers short-handed.

"We only want to expedite the current system," Tapia said.

Looper and Tapia are hoping an office in Mexico can help Colorado farmers draw migrant workers through an existing federal visa program called "H-2A."

That program has no cap on visa numbers, as some other visas do. However, employers must first find the specific foreign employees they want to hire, then have them approved by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The state of Colorado and employers also would have to provide housing and transportation for migrant workers.

I'm Canadian and have a Korean wife. She is applying for permanent residence and wants to also apply for a work VISA. However, the documentation I have seems to imply that she needs to have an employer ready to offer her work and supply papers that prove this BEFORE she can get a work VISA. It makes no sense...no employer so far has even looked at her without a work VISA first. What gives?? Which is first?

Case-scenario: mom-dad w/kids. Father speaks to kids in foreign language exclusively anytime any where. Mom speaks to them in english exclusively. Kids will have no lack of oportunity to learn english as they spend 8-10 hrs/day in all-english daycare. Eeverthing (TV, Radio, etc.) and everybody else speaks to them in english. The only chance they get to get the other language is when talked to-talking to dad (who sees them only 2-3 hrs/day and weekends).

There's love and respect to this country. It's home. There's just a wish the kids learn something that will be useful to them and connects them with the other half of their heritage. It's just sometimes the disapproval of people arounds us can be felt pretty hard, even though, I think, they don't need to know what we are telling our kids. They feel like they have a right to. Not everyone, just some people. Others are very appreciative and seem to understand the situation.

If a u.s. citizen who was poor knocked on your door and asked to rent a room, to pay for some of your food, and pay for everything else would you let them?

it is more like you having a room to rent, food to eat, ect. but the security at the front gate to your mansion won't let this person in because they could not bring by the flyer needed to enter the gate so they just hoped the gate but once they get in and knock on your door you let them in because you assume they showed the flyer at the front gate. so your giving them a place to stay, something to eat, ect. they don't break in and take everything.

Oh yeah i got illegals in my house all day long they broke in and took what they wanted and they been doing it for 20 years and i let them and countine to. lol But I let the legal ones come in my house and gave them whatever they want. lol thats not even close.

Once upon a time I was well on my way to becoming conversational in spanish, and I still speak pretty good spanish. But, I remembered that this is MY country and that I shouldnt be going out of my way to learn their language when they can even say hello. Now, I wont speak spanish, even if I know what to say to them. But, I do know when their talking about me and I hear every sexual remark made about my wife and daughters. which is very often and involves all non spanish speaking women.

Grumpy old man, I didn't like Huckabee either, he pretends to be for protecting the borders, but he is not. They are all scrambling to be THE illegal immigration savior candidate now that they know that 85% of the American people do not want them here. It is laughable...it really is. A commercial truck driver from Monterrey who has crossed Laredos international bridges countless times was stunned earlier this month when he received a ticket from U.S. inspectors because he cant speak English."We were worried," said Samuel Tamez Treviño, owner of the truck that was driven by Rafael Segovia. "We consulted with attorneys. We were somewhat relieved when they told us it would be treated as a warning. But now what are we supposed to do?"

Tamez Treviño, whose transportation company is in Montemorelos, is concerned that his drivers may be unable or unwilling to learn English, considering that even a short, intense course to learn the basics can take five months.

Segovia, who was back home and unavailable for comment, was handed the citation on Aug. 2 at about 4:45 p.m. at the Colombia-Solidarity International Bridge. He also was cited for having non-working brake lights and a leaky hydraulic hose, which are fairly routine violations.

Tamez Treviño said hes never heard of any law requiring that his drivers know English. Many company owners dont speak English, let alone their workers, many of whom dont even have a high school education.

The law requiring that Mexican truckers coming into the United States speak English has been on the books for years, but it has taken on renewed significance with the coming implementation of a new provision that will allow up to 100 Mexican carriers to go beyond the border zone. It also will allow up to 100 U.S. carriers to go deep into Mexico with their loads.

While many international trade supporters praise the move as long overdue and a natural outgrowth of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the plan has many critics, including labor leaders and some U.S. transportation companies who fear the Mexican trucks will be unsafe and create unnecessary risks on U.S. highways
Nevertheless, a demonstration project is set to begin within a few weeks, allowing Mexican carriers that have passed the required safety audit to take their trucks onto U.S. roads.

Mexican truckers have their own complaints.

"Theyre already bothering us in the United States and it hasnt even started," said Luis Moreno Sesma, president of the Nuevo Laredo branch of Canacar, a national association of transportation company owners. "Its not fair to require English in the commercial (border) zone."

Federal transportation officials in Laredo declined to comment, but a spokeswoman for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in Washington said truck drivers who are working only in the border commercial zone may be found in violation of the law for not being able to communicate in English but wont be stopped from crossing.

Those truck drivers who are headed past the border commercial zone, however, will not be allowed to continue their trip if they cant speak English, the spokeswoman said.

"The Mexican drivers may receive citations," said the spokeswoman, who declined to give her name, "but that doesnt mean they have to stop working."

Asked why the Mexican drivers werent given notice about the plan to start enforcing the law, the spokeswoman said Mexican authorities have been fully aware of the plan for some time. The Ministry of Communications and Transportation was involved in creating the demonstration program thats set to start soon.

You wake up one day in a one bedroom shack, tour stomache gumbles but there is little to eat. You look over at your children who are playing with the bugs that infest your house. Your wife has left to fetch water for the daily chores.
You have no lights or anything. Then a friend of yours stops by and tells you if you go to Canada the jobs are plentiful and pay well, but it is a dangerous journey and many people there will hate you.
Do you go so your family can eat?

MCHenry County Judge to issue a restraining order to prevent the debate. How many illegal immigrants does this Holiday Inn employ and why is it that illegal immigrants can march in our streets, hold rallies and commit all kinds of illegal acts while law-abiding U.S.Citizens have their free speech prevented? Let's get immigration down on the Holiday INNs across the USA and fine them for hiring, harboring, and helping illegal immigrants. Do you think then that their "fear" (which was the reason cited for demanding the restraining order) would then be justified? These illegal immigrants have spat on law-abiding citizens, have tried to do all kinds of things to cause law-abiding citizens to react violently and the citizens have not done so. So, where is the justification for this curtailment of free speech?

I've been toying with the idea of moving to America for quite some time. I'm not in a very good financial position though.

The thing is I don't want to wait for a good financial position. I realise that by waiting for that I will certainly be waiting forever.

So the question is this:

What would you suggest a young British man do if he just stepped off a plane in America with zero money, nowhere to go, and obviously no job?

Also I find it unlikely I'll be bringing any of my worldly possessions with me, so it'll be just me, the clothes i stand in, and a few little bits to keep me sane.

Just a worst case scenario, I probably will have a very limited amount of money. lol

What would you suggest to be the first thing I do if I go ahead and 'take the plunge'?
