From our very own Yahoo news service.WASHINGTON - Mexican trucks could have to wait longer than anticipated to haul freight deep into the United States.

The Bush administration in February announced that it would soon allow 100 Mexican trucking companies to travel beyond the current 20-mile limit for a one-year pilot project.

But a Senate panel on Thursday voted to delay the plan by requiring the administration to publish details about it and giving the public time to comment on it. The action came as part of a supplemental spending bill to pay for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"The administration is rushing to open the border to Mexican-domiciled trucks without assuring their safety and enforcement of the law of the U.S.," said Joan Claybrook, president of Public Citizen. "They can't go rushing forward in opening the border without having explained what their pilot project is."

The Transportation Department said it is committed to moving forward with the program and will work with lawmakers to address their concerns.

"The Mexican trucking demonstration program will bring real benefits and real dollars to the American economy while maintaining all U.S. safety and security standards," the department said in a statement.

Democratic Sens. Byron Dorgan (news, bio, voting record) of North Dakota, Dianne Feinstein (news, bio, voting record) of California and Patty Murray (news, bio, voting record) of Washington sponsored the amendment.

"There still remain very significant safety issues," Dorgan said.

He also criticized the Bush administration for opening the border to Mexican trucks before Mexico opened the border to U.S. trucks. "They were going to implement these plans for Mexican long-haul trucks in a way that was at odds with how the Mexicans were going to treat American truckers," Dorgan said.

The move to delay the administration plan was welcomed by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

"This is an important first step in our fight to ensure the safety and security of America's highways," said Teamsters spokeswoman Leigh Strope.

Access to all U.S. highways was promised by 2000 under the 1993 North American Free Trade Agreement, as was access through Mexico for U.S. carriers.

That aspect of NAFTA, however, was stalled by lawsuits and disagreements between the two countries, though Canadian and U.S. trucks travel freely across the northern border.

The Bush pilot project will let Mexican truck companies travel from Mexico throughout the United States and back. No hazardous material shipments will be permitted.

I was wondering actually for my husband, he's from Egypt and we had our interview last August and now it is almost April, I was wondering how much longer can it take. I am anxious to start traveling with him and not have to leave him back in the US. If anyone has any experience with greencards and immigration I would appreciate your feed back, thanks.

There are areas of the economy that can't afford to pay Americans high wages for low skilled jobs.
A guest worker program would allow for poor people from other countries to come and fill those kind of jobs

I know that Mr. Obama will not answer my question but I know that my question will reach him, who knows? I may not be a US citizen but I'm paying my dues (taxes and all), not like others who are not and being taken cared off by the government. I am not a bum. Do you happen to know how many Filipinos are there living and working in the US? Look and see inside the hospitals all over your country and see how many Filipino nurses are there serving your populations. Yes! i'm getting a high salary, of course i'm a professional, a registered Nurse and I am entitled to that. I may not be a US citizen now but in 5 years time we'll be just the same....your country, your flag, your national anthem, your president and your politics. Anyways, thank you for all your answers.

The Schengen Agreement allows for free movement throughout its signatory nations through the abolition of internal border controls.
Does this mean that if you want to travel to a country, which is a member of the Schengen Agreement, you can effectively apply for a visa not just from your destination country, but also from any one of the other member states? For example, if one wished to travel Sweden, one could apply for the Schengen visa at a Greek embassy to gain entry to Sweden, yes?

Instead of throwing open the gates between us and Mexico how about if we took prisoners out of the overcrowded prisions everyday to do the jobs that illegal aileans are doing now?? It would be even cheeper labor and why should prisoners just sit around all day taking college coarses, working out, watching TV, or even sitting in a cell?? Put them to work. We hav a huge un used work force!

I'd like it to be answered by latinos, to know if they feel this group Represents them: as well as by American, or latino USA Citizen that have feel the hate most due by this kind of ideas, than for the immigration itself.

My boyfriend of four and a half years was here illegally, he left the country under a voluntary departure last week. We have two children together (3yrs and 6wks) and we really need his help over here. I was wondering how I go about doing a K-1 fiancé visa. Are they going to want me to fill out an affidavit of support as well? What if I can’t support him? I’d appreciate any help or advise anyone can offer. Thanks.
