Philistinism is used to describe a particular attitude or set of values. When a person is called a Philistine (in the relevant sense), he is said to despise or undervalue art, beauty, intellectual content, and/or spiritual values. Philistines are also said to be materialistic, to favor conventional social values unthinkingly, and to favor forms of art that have a cheap and easy appeal.

Philistinism affords a contrast to Bohemianism, as the character of a smugly conventional bourgeois social group perceived to lack all the desirably soulful 'bohemian' characteristics, especially an artistic temperament and a broad cultural horizon open to the avant-garde. To the chosen few, the 'Philistines' embodied a smug, anti-intellectual threatening majority, in the 'culture wars' of the 19th century.

It seems that America has never been in such a dangerous and precarious position as we are under the Bush administration.
What do you think Democrats will do to turn things around and get America back on the road to recovery?

I don't really understand why the republicans covered up and aided this creep in his actions against children working at the Capital.
Was it purely political, and if so what does that say about the gop?

If you voted for a candidate that won the election, and then that person switched political parties (from Dem to Repub or Repub to Dem), would you still support him/her?

Since it looks as though the Democrats are going to control at least the House, if not the Senate too, I was wondering what specific areas people think they will be targeting to help America?

what do you think of political campaign ads?

I must admit, at 55, and being a person who is always listed as "unaffiliated" rather than supporting a political party, that I always like to take a look at indiuvidual candidates at all levels and learn as much as practicable about them and their positions before casting any votes one way or the other. I have voted both Republican and Democrat in my lifetime.

But taking serious stock of the looney left that has taken control of the Democratic Party in the last few decades -- and seeing it only get WORSE! -- I am just going to vote a STRAIGHT Republican TICKET this time! I have never done such a thing before, but just am sick and tired of arrogant, hateful, distorting and insulting LIBERALS. Whatever it takes to reduce their numbers in this world I am henceforth willing to do. Enough is enough!

If ever the Democrats -- or anyone else -- put up decent and sensible people who aren't trying to make the U.S. weak and serving the UN, or acting haughty, I may support them. Not now!

How did congress approve going to war in Iraq? I've been watching debates on the Sunday morning news shows for weeks now, and each and every democrat running for office claims they were ALWAYS against the war and that they have been an OUTSPOKEN critic since day one. With all that criticism and resistance , how was it that their votes were FOR invading Iraq?

Bush administration is up to its old manipulations. In order to influence elections in Bush's favor they have made a couple arrangements that I know about, there are probably more:

1)Saddam Hussein verdict postponed until two days before US election. Because of this it will be in the headlines the day before elections in the US. It was originally going to be October 16, a date that would have had little influence on US elections.

2)IRS has been asked to delay taking action on back taxes on Katrina victims until after the current elections. This has never been done by any other commissioner of the IRS as it is considered very improper.

What do you guys think of these actions? Do you know of any other stunts?

85% of our population lies within the range of moderate whether it be republican or Democrat. Why then does the far right control the republican party and the far left the democratic party. Why can't Americans get true representation? Also how will you vote this election season?
