I need to know if rats chew on the bars of wire cages and make a lot of noise. I've had hamsters and at night they'd go CRAZY chewing on the lids of their cages and banging stuff around. I'm not completely sure if rats are the same way. Are they?

Why does my gerbil chew on the bar of her cages? I give her plenty of cardboard, and the cage is clean. She has cardboard in there now, but she just climbs onto the bars, and chews on them, and quite frankly, it drives me crazy. The sound just grates my nerves. Generally, if I say her name loudly, she will stop, and hop down, but not always. Why is she doing this???

I have a hamster whose almost 2 years old. last night I found a lump on her side that wasn't there the day before or even earlier that day from what I could see. she was bleeding from two spots on it last night, but tonight she had 3 wounds on it. it doesn't seem to be hurting her until you touch it to see it better then she bites. Other wise she walks fine, rolls in her ball fine, and from what I've been seeing, eating and drinking fine. Please help me figure out what's wrong and how to fix it. I'm not attached enough to worry about vets in my tiny town.

Is it ok for my rat to drink milk? I know they have a reputation of eating cheese but I heard they actually can't have milk and cheese. Which one is it? Are they or aren't they allowed to eat dairy products? Cuz my rat loves to drink milk but I dont want to continue giving it to her if its bad for her.

I was wondering if i could use cedar bedding for a rat. I was thinking of getting one and I have left over cedar bedding from my hamsters (which i have just discoverd is the cause of their death :'( ) so i was just wondering if I could use it on them. If not what kind of animal can use cedar bedding?

Any advice would be great....

my dog tried to catch a mouse in the backyard and it ran under a door and got stuck. when we went to pick up the body [assuming it was dead], it started walking with its two front arms/legs whatever you call them and dragging the back two. we tried to save it by putting it into an old cage of ours with bedding, food and water for the night. now she seems to be walking just fine so i dont think anything is broken. and, but of course with my luck she ended up having babies. there is a toilet paper tube in there and she gave birth to them in there. now, if i buy a very small igloo for her, will she be able to move them?

also, i have not touched the babies, or the tube or anything in the cage at all since she's had them. i've only dropped some food in because of the chance of her abandoning them.

i'm sorry if this is a stupid question. i've never had a mouse before so i'm lost. i do not plan on keeping her or the babies. i just want to make sure they are all safe for the time being.

My mom told me 'your cat has a mouse' earlier today. I ran to my room and found him, of course, playing with a small brown mouse who was wobbiling helplessly between his paws. I shooed away my cat and scooped up the mouse, putting it in a cage with towels, seeds, fruit, a little cheese and some water. I covered the cage with a towel.
Clearly, there is a problem with its hind legs. What should I do? I'm thinking maybe it needs a cast/splint... but how? My mom wants to just flush it, but how can I possibly do that to a helpless mouse?? It's not too hurt, it was crawling around and sleeping in the cage. Perhaps I can let it rest up until its healthy enough to be let go. Or, at least, let it die comfortably.
Please don't just suggest I rid it. I have a pet rat who I adore, and I have a strong love of animals. I plan on becoming a vet after school. Now its sleeping with plenty of rodent-friendly food should it feel like eating.

Suggestions?

We've had a problem with mice since 2004. We've caught about 8 since then! However, came downstairs this morning (5.30) and nearly and quite literally nearly had a heart attack. I saw a mouse and it ran behind the cooker! I nearly died. I've got 4 traps down (all with peanut butter in) and poison and they're still roaming around. What more can I do? I don't have a cat, as I've no one to look after one if I ever go away (our neighbours are horrible)

Well, the question pretty much explains it. When I pick up my mouse, she stays calm for about 5 seconds, and begins to try and crawl out of my hands. I've had her for about a week, and I was pretty sure she began trusting me enough for me to hold her. Should I handle her more, or should I re-train her from the beginning?
