This works. Buy peppermint extract (in the spice section at the grocery store) and put it on cotton balls. You can put them anywhere - they smell good! Rodent's, however, absolutely detest the smell. No more mice. Good Luck.

Traps with peanut butter are good; don't leave any other food where they can get it. I don't recommend poison because, after the mouse eats it, it can go outside and a cat or owl could eat the mouse and be poisoned.
Only 8 mice in 3 years? that's not too bad. Of course, you may have them and not know it; often they don't make themselves obvious, but you will find their poop behind the furniture.
If you could figure out where they come in, you could block their access.

Mice aren't the smartest creatures, but they're smart enough to know you're baiting your trap with peanut butter. What have they been mainly scavenging from your kitchen? At my in-law's house it was dog food, so the traps were set with dog food AND peanut butter. They trapped 4 rats within a couple of days. We used the Mice Cube ($2 at WalMart) when I was growing up so we wouldn't have to kill them.
Also, if you have pets in your home you even slightly suspect will eat the rats, do NOT use poison. Your animals can die as a result of second hand exposure. Also, if mice are anything like rats, they have a designated "taster" that checks out food to see if its safe for the colony (yes, Ratatouille was accurate).
You're lucky its mice... they're afraid of people. They won't hurt you unless they absolutely have to. Wild rats, on the other hand... they'll attempt to taste you. I've kept domestic rats for a LONG time, but I was bit by a wild Norway variety while sleeping... twice (the first bite, I dreamed I was caught on a blackberry Brier). I live trapped him and he was still trying to lunge at me through the cage. He'd gotten in through an open window next to our domestic rat's cage and she'd torn a nice gash in his tail. Viva guard rat! There's a big difference between wild and domesticated animals, and even wild ones can be semi-domesticated if you start young enough.

you can actually get these little units that plug right into the wall power socket, it makes a sound that is too high for us to hear, it is designed to keep rats mice and some other pests away.. there have been mixed results but it has worked for me in the past...it makes the mice leave without poisoning them and then they go die in te walls and stink, or splatting them in a trap...this way is humane and more convenient for you..you should consider it..and if it dont work you have atleast tried and only wasted afew dollars.. i personally think it is cruel killing them..but once your infested somtimes it is the only way...good luck i hope they go away soon

Leave absolutely no food where they can get to it and if possible try to find out where they are running to. If you can find this then you can probably block their access. Pests are only after food, once their food source is gone they will move on.
The best way to kill rats is with those green blocks of poison (forget what they're called) because it makes them thirsty so they go outside looking for water and die outside. I guess they would work for mice as well.
