Reptiles - December 2007

I just can't decide on what reptile I should get. I'll do tons of research on one, then see another and research that. I would like a medium sized reptile, that can live in a 55 gallon tank. I WILL have all the lighting, heating, feeding requirements fulfilled, I just don't know what I should get.

I would like for it to be able to handle it regularly, not require to much humidity (sprays in the tank with a waterbottle daily would be nice)

I was thinking a blue tongue skink. What do you think

*I will do all the research, and make sure I can handle the pet before I decide to get it

Thanks

I recently separated him from his cage mate because he lost his tail. I've given him more worms than I normally would, because he needs to store fat. However, everytime I glance in it looks like its all gone! Then I check on him to see if his stump is alright (as in not infected) and I find tons of the mealworms in his coconut! Is this normal behavior, or is there something I should do?

My son is 7 years old and he wants a snake or a lizard as a pet. I've heard that they can be hard to take care of. I want something he can primarily take care of himself, not something that his father and I will have to do all the work for.

Any suggestions?

hello!
ive had my cornsnake for about 2 months now after picking her up from a home where she wasnt really being looked after. she seems happy 2 be handled, shes active and has no problem eating.
she is too big to be eating pinkies but too small for adult mice yet. so im feeding her every 4 days on fluffies/fuzzies (frozen). this is my problem- the owners before both told me to feed her different things. the first said fuzzies and the other said fluffies!

so i was just woundering is there any difference between fluffies and fuzzies or are they booth just different names for the same thing!?
thanks

I'm interested in getting turtles and I need to find out where to get appropriate equipment. Does this look like it would be decent?: http://www.guppysaquariumproducts.com.au/uv-sterilizers/aquarium-uv-light-6w-hang-on/prod_29.html
Also does anyone have any other advice on caring for turtles?

I was wondering if my RES Turtle could sleep a full night underwater and be ok. And I was also wondering how to fix a leak in my tank where the panes of glass meet (like is there a special caulk I can use the won't affect the turtle and is safe for it).

I got them an aquarium, a floating dock, a basking lamp, a filter, a water conditioner, and a heater for the water. The only problem is they won't eat, I gave them some pellets for small aquatic animals but they wont eat them. Is there anything I can do to get them to eat. I got them yesterday and they have not eaten anything since they left the pet store. I am worried that they will die what can I do?

My bearded dragon does not like to swim very much, she is about three years old, and i love her to death- but when she is swimming i get so scared because she acts like she's going to die in two inches of water! I put her in the bath to bathe her, and i keep my hands in there so she can climb on me if she gets TOO scared, and i get clawed REALLY bad... I know that not all bearded dragons like to swim, but SERIOUSLY! It's gotten to the point that i really hate to bathe her... What's up with this? How can i get her to like the water - or at least not think she's going to drown in it!
Any ideas...?

i have been told that geckos, bearded dragons and water dragons are good docile lizards but in my experience bearded dragons are kind of boring. it seems like they just lay around all day and geckos are nocturnal so the sleep around all day. as for the water dragons i'm not sure. what about green iguanas or monitors?

He rarely comes out and crawls around on his branch or hide in his hut or even go near his water. I have to always dig around to find him. I am a new snake owner as well and I only hold him a few mintues per day, is this enough to get him used to being held?

Okay I just got my first reptile. She is a Leopard Gecko morph and the breeder said that she was born on the 17 of October. So she is still very young and only weighs 14 grams. Anyway, my friend also got a leo as well, however hers explores its surroundings and plays in its tank. Mine however hides 24-7. The only time she ever comes out is maybe for 5, 10 mins top at some point during the night. I know she is a baby and I've only had her about a week, however I'm afraid she is being to reclussive and antisocial. I've gotten her out and she will let me pick her up and she will eat food(when she is hungry) when I offer it. I'm sure I'm just making something out of nothing, but I don't want to end up with a gecko that doesn't do anything exciting. I mean thats half the point of having one, is watching them thrive in their environment. Anyway, my question is, basically, do you think she will "come out of her shell" as she matures and becomes an adult. Thank you for your time!
