I was wondering if my RES Turtle could sleep a full night underwater and be ok. And I was also wondering how to fix a leak in my tank where the panes of glass meet (like is there a special caulk I can use the won't affect the turtle and is safe for it).

They can hold their breath a long time, but not that long.
You can fix a leaky tank with clear silicone sealant. That's what originally sealed it. You can pick it up at any hardware store, it goes on like caulking.

sure, it would be okay for the turtles to sleep a full night underwater. my turtles sleep underwater.

to fix a leak in a tank use a silicone glue. that will fix the leak. clean the tank and add the silicone, let the silicone, and then you can refill the tank.

They sleep underwater, breathing very little- often in quick darts to the surface, only their nose poking out- so fast you usually miss it.

Any aquarium sealant would work fine- just let it cure well before using the tank.

However, it is my experience that once you seal a tank, they often start to leak again pretty quickly. You may want to think about using a nice big plastic tub instead.

First of all, the name is "Red Eared Slider". Though, only some sea turtles actually sleep underwater for a period of time. Green Sea Turtles, for example, can hold their breath for up to five hours. Some inland water turtles may have their bodies submerged but the head is out of the water. They have lungs to breathe as we do. They don't have gills like a fish. They can hold their breath for a good period of time but species like Red Eared Sliders don't sleep with their head submerged underwater. However, the length of time that they can hold their breath depends on the species and size of the turtle. It also depends on the water temperature. You need to stop listening to these idiots who know nothing about wildlife or exotic pets. Red Eared Sliders sleep either on land next to the water, on a log or in very shallow water on the bank of a pond or lake. They must have their head above water to breathe. Some will also sit in piled reeds or have the front of their body resting on a large lillypad. I use to keep them. I also have studied and photographed them in the wild. My friend on the herpetological society has a pond with wild Red Eared Sliders in it. However, I have seen them my entire life living where I do. As far as your leak goes, there is a good aquarium sealer that is sold in pet shops and some hardware stores. It is a clear, water tight type of silicone used to put the aquariums together. Make sure the one you buy says that it is safe for aquarium use. Some of them are not. Also, make sure you apply it properly or you will have to do the job all over. about the closing it's eyes thing are you sure they are not puffed up and you just can't see the eyes. if so then it's lacking vitamin a which can be solved by a more nutritional meal along with turtle eye drops. also maybe it doesn't enjoy the food you feed it. if it's a baby it prefers more carnivorous food and won't eat veggies. if not it may be sick but just in case put about 2 small slow gold fish in the tank and if that doesn't work put some meal worms in the tank and as a final resort get him checked out by the vet and see if he has a disease. and one last thing i don't advise putting it in the sun without water because they don't enjoy that and some parasites can also get in his skin if you let him walk on the grass. he also probably gets scared when you pick him up so when he notices you he trys to hide so he doesn't get picked up.

yes, they sleep under the water, and are capable to hold breath for a long time they do this when they hibernate in wild nature. but this is not something common for them to do this during the normal warm nights.
