I will be moving into a condo soon with my 2 beloved canines, a jack russell and my little mini-rott, baby girl, not a regular size rott..anyway, i work 8 hours a day and don't have anyone to walk them, because I have 2 dogs, if I pay a dog walker, or day care I will go broke and poor, I can walk them a lot at night, or a little in the morning, and a little at night...weekends are covered, i'm a 9-5'er, worried about leaving them alone all day and if I crate them i feel I'm being inhumane thinking they will get cage fever, is that true? Leaving them alone could be disaster in the making...anyone else in this predicament, or has been, what did you do? what awesome toys out there could possibly kill the time (tried kongs), then there is 7+hours left to their own devices...any cheaper dog walkers in the GTA that anyone knows of? I would slice my wrists before giving my dogs up, so please don't suggest this as an option. There has to be some tips I may not know of
JRT - 1.5yr, rott- 1yr

sorry I know I'm waisting points and some peoples time but i thought it was worth it. Why are so many people against shelter puppies and against fixing their own dogs? My vet told me that down south, people don't even want to adopt a dog if it's already fixed. I don't get it, there are so many adorable young puppies in shelters.
Why??

P.S. I understand reputable breeders who do this for a living not fixing their dogs obviously but to everyone else, I dont understand you at all.

My Dane Sammi is potty trained yet sometimes pees in the house I was just wondering when you finally let your dane run free at night and while you were away and how old were they. I just feel bad cause I feel like she is in the cage too much. But the vet said it is fine. how much longer till I can let her roam my house while i am not there and in bed.

Adopted a dog and she wasn't taken care of properly so unfortunately I also adopted her fleas which she has passed on to my other dog and two cats. I'm looking for a home remedy that is an all natural alternative to something like Frontline.

My dog is allergic to fleas. She is itching and biting herself raw. She can only have one or 2 fleas and she does this. Does Advantage really work?

I have finally found a Shiba Inu from rescue that is quite near to me! Now I have a few questions, though, because the dog is said to have some problems, yet others disagree.

This dog is being given away by his owner because she feels her is highly territorial, agressive, and terrible with other dogs. She says he is untrainable and far too much to handle.

However, her vet and a local breeder have both evaluated the dog and said he is one of the best Shibas they have ever seen. They feel the woman is just making excuses to get rid of the dog because she feels a bit overwhelmed.

He is an older dog, so training him will be a little harder (especially since Shibas are already hard to train), but I'm willing to put the time and effort needed towards the training.

I'm just not sure if I can trust the vet and breeder. They've both never seen him with another dog or in his home enviroment, and I know that dogs act differently at home then they do when they are out.

I don't understand how the price of some mutt designer dog is over $1000 easily, but the price of pure bred labs, retrievers, spaniels, and others hardly reach $500. And what about Shiba Inus? They're something like $500-$1000. They're just as pure bred as others.

Is it the rarity in the breed, or the demand for the breed that causes such a difference?

Someone shed some light, please!

We are preety sure that someone abandoned this dog because it was pregnant and they didn't want to deal with it. She is friendly but wary. She's a Sheltie mix and the vet estimated that she is around two. We are giving her puppy food as the vet recommended. We are also doing plenty of research on whelping and delivering puppies. Luckily, we have a lot of people that would like her pups! We are working something out with a local animal rescue group that they must agree to have the pups fixed so this doesn't happen again. They are nice enought to find a vet that'll spay and neuter for half the normal cost. He did an ultrasound and said it looks like 6 puppies. Should we be giving her additional vitamins or is the puppy food sufficient? Where can we buy a whelping box or is it cheaper to make one (and if so, how do you make one?)? Is it better to keep distance while she is delivering and let her do everything or be by her side? She has really grown to trust us. Thanks!

A lot of times, questions about dog food are answered "ask your vet!"

How many of you take your vet's advice on what food to give your pets?

Does your vet recommend only the "popular" foods (Science Diet, Iams, Purina, etc), or do they recommend more holistic foods (Innova, Merrick, Canidae, etc)? Or do they recommend "any major brand" (including foods like Beneful, Kibbles n Bits, Alpo).

I feel really terrible about this as i didnt just get a puppy without thinking, i thought about nothing else for the last 6 months, we read all the books, found a good breeder, and puppy proofed the house.
We spent ages finding a breeder we liked, visited mia from 3 weeks till 7 weeks when we picked her up, and i was so excited about getting her. The thing is even though i love her to bits, i have this feeling that we have made a terrible mistake, she seems very dominant and im not sure we are going to be able to cope with her as she gets bigger( she is a doberman 8weeks now).
She bites alot, when she is calm she isnt so bad, but she has a couple of mad hours, and runs round and round biting/snapping at everyone. We tell her no, and try to ignore her but its hard.
I cant take her out as she hasnt had her injections yet.
Please could anyone with experience of dobermans give me some advice, will she calm down, how can i let her know that i am the boss?

We took in a stray dog 11 years ago. A neighbor had found him and spent days finding the owner and couldn't. We were looking for a dog for our family and decided to help her out also. The dog had obviously been abused, he crouched when anyone tried to pet him. We named him Kramer. We found out soon afterwards Kramer is epileptic. We decided to keep him anyway, though the two medicines he needs runs about $40/month and we must visit his neurologist once a year. A few years ago we were told he has a thyroid condition, so now he takes 3 medicines a day.

The problem is: he is so much work. Because of his seizures, we have to keep an eye on him 24/7. When he seizures, he can't control his tongue so he tries to eat our carpets. We put him outside, so he pulls at the grass until the seizure stops. A few times he got to our carpets before we could stop him, so they needed repair. The medicine keeps his seizures to around 3 a month, without the meds it would be 3 a week.

He acts very listless. Usually he comes and goes straight for his treat. The last couple days he just flops down on the floor. He has also thrown up at least 2 times and left another mess on the floor. What could be wrong?
