My Dane Sammi is potty trained yet sometimes pees in the house I was just wondering when you finally let your dane run free at night and while you were away and how old were they. I just feel bad cause I feel like she is in the cage too much. But the vet said it is fine. how much longer till I can let her roam my house while i am not there and in bed.

she is still really young sounds like you are off to a good start. just keep doing what you are doing. You could just try letting her out more often.

Don't let a young pup run around the house unattended you will regret it. They get into everything and will chew on stuff. We waited 9 months to start letting him around the house unattended when we were home. But if we go out he is in his cage.

When you feed him in the morning wait about 15 minutes and take him outside. He will most likely go potty, if he doesn't DO NOT play with him because he is going to think its ok not to go potty when told. Just wait and within a few minutes he will go potty. Treat him as if he won a gold medal and after he does play with him. Take him inside. Take him outside between 1 1/2 - 2 hours. Remember whenever he wakes up he will have to go potty too. Good luck. Trust me it will become a success even though it may seem like a nightmare ;P

I heard from a trainer that it takes exactly one year to properly potty train a puppy. I'm not sure I would go for exactly a year but I think in your case a couple more months wouldn't hurt. For a 5 month old puppy, having an accident every once in a while is very good.

At 5 mo she is entering teenager stage. She will forget rules, test boundaries, experiment and explore. In general she will be just as much a pain as a human teenager (not to step on any toes, here - yes, we've all been through that stage.) Two advantages over humans - the stage lasts much shorter time - and they don't giggle over farts, etc.

For her own safety keep using the crate when you are not able to watch her until she can be trusted all the time - probably at least another year.

my dog is almost two, and i don't let her "run free" at night. she goes into her crate. my dog is completely potty trained, but i don't leave her running free in the house unsupervised. i am a stay at home mom, so most of the time she is out of her crate and with me. if i go to the store and she doesn't go with me, she goes in the crate. 5 months is still pretty young to be "completely" potty trained. if i were you, i would keep her crated up at night and while you are away. good luck.

Please do not consider leaving your puppy at large without supervision until at least she is finished teething and the unfortunate chewing that goes with it. You should have her crate next to your bed at night, or at least nearby in your bedroom.

If she pees in the house, she needs to be taken out more often, and you need to learn the signs --sometimes they are very subtle -- of when she needs to go out. Intercept her accidents by calling her to go outside.

Make sure she has enough exercise and stimulation when you are home, and she will use the time in her crate to rest. Also make sure you have water and chew toys in her cage for her--she should not be deprived of water.

A five month old puppy still cannot hold their pee for long periods of time. You have to make an effort to take him out on a regular basis and establish a routine. If the dog is alone all day it is bound to still have pee accidents.

It depends on the dog. Yes, they are first trained during the daytime, when you are there.
Usually it is between one and two yrs before I leave mine uncrated at night or when I'm not home.
Five months still need to be in a crate when unsupervised.
