I am looking after my brothers Jack Russel while he is on holiday. She is a lovely little thing but she is constantly scratching and rubbing herself raw by dragging herself along the carpet.

She had been to the vet on numerous occasions, she does not have fleas or mites (she has had skin scrapings taken) and the vet concludes its stress related - she does get worse if she goes into kennels etc, which is why she now stays with us. They did try diets recommend by the vets which didn't work which is why he is convinced its stress.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any skin regime that I can suggest my brother and his family follow to stop her itching so much? I currently have her on Serenum, a herbal 'calmer' to see if that calms her down a bit which in theory will then stop her getting stressed and therefore not so itchy.

Any advice please?

you know jack russells are know to kill cats? well i was walking up the stairs and my neighbour had let their cat outside their door. my dog saw it and ran to it, smelling it very intensely. he was very interested in what it was and he kept smelling it but he did not attack or bite it. he is a very friendly dog but i swear i thought he would attack the cat. is he one of those few jack russells who dont?
the cat was circling him as well. i picked my dog up and put him in the other direction and he was fine with going up with me

I adopted this dog from a local humane society and she is a 3 year old daschund/jack russell terrier mix. She is in heat(I'm getting her fixed in 2 weeks) but I don't know if this has anything to do with the way she's been acting. She seems very sluggish and not energetic by no means. She was eating wet dog food for the first few days but today she hasn't eaten or drank any water. All she wants to do is sleep. And when she's in my room with me she never gets up unless I do. She don't even get up to tell me she needs to go to the bathroom. When we do go out to the bathroom all she does is urinate. I've had her now for 4-5 days and I've only seen her leave droppings twice. Is this what dogs do when they are in heat or is she sick? If anyone has any information it would be much appreciated. Thanks again..

Are you prepared to breed a litter? I hope that you are. I always tell people that they need funds put aside for a litter, this is one reason. My ***** (German Shepherd) went into labor today at 60 days. I just got home from the ER vet, she is still there till morning. Bill so far is over $1000 for the emergency c-section on a 1 puppy litter. This pup was at least twice the size of a normal GSD pup at birth. Huge pup. The ***** could not of gotten the shoulders out period. The pup was dead. Are you all prepared for an emergency like this? You really need to have funds put aside for stuff like this, if you can not, then please do not breed. I will be going back to pick my girl up in 6 hours to bring her home with no pups. Granted this is only my second c-section in the past 10 years, but this can happen and people need to be prepared for it. Look at this question that I found that was posted 3 hours ago! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Atay44IUKJnXoJYD3J5BI.Lsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071003194023AAFUvs1

me and my family cannot decide whether we should adopt from the shelter or get a puppy from a realy good breeder. ok, so please help me figure this out.

my parents are worried about the shelter, we think it would be nice to save a dog, but their worried, sometimes these dogs were abused and abused dogs can sometimes be agressive (not there fault, we know that!) but we do have an 8 yr old in the house and we dont want him hurt... well my parents dont. lol. no im kidding none of us do.

and when you adopt, you dont get a health gaurantee like you do at a breeders.

for the people that have went to a decent breeder, can you tell us what the process is? i know there are questions they will ask us, but what about waiting lists? do THEY choose our puppy? do they visit our house? i guess every breeder has different rules.. but can you tell me what you had to do? its just nice to know.

ok. pro's and cons for both please. what do you recomend?

My parents have never wanted a dog, but for some reason now my mom (who was really against it) all of a sudden is agreeing. I am 17, never really begged them for a dog but I have told them a few times that having a dog would make life a little more exciting.

They agreed but they said only a low maintenance small dog like a chihuahua. Which I wouldn't mind.

So I want a puppy, like only a few days old type. What's the best way to find one? I live in the LA area, in suburbia -_-.

My dog had some sort of pimple on her back. When I squeezed it, a dark brown pus came out. It popped out the way pimples do. It seemed a lot of it came out, I'd say three times as much as what comes out of my average zit. What could this substance be?

(I don't usually try to pop zits on my dogs)

This vet i was visiting for the first time diagnosed my dog with seborrhea. He and I got into an argument regarding the cost of his treatment plan(cost was MUCH higher than he originally quoted). He prescribed clavamox and said I could only get it through him.He said he would NOT authorize a prescription so I could get it elsewhere. He acted very pompous and rude. Now, my dog is still miserable and I cannot get Clavamox anywhere without a Rx. And I cannot go back to that vet because he wouldn't even give the Rx for it unless i agreed to the ENTIRE treatment plan. I think it's unfair don't you? What should I do to help my baby feel better and WHERE can I get some clavamox??

We have a 2year old female German Shepherd (American bred) and a 1 year and 9 month old male German Shepherd we picked up as a puppy in Germany. We would love to have one set of puppies before we have our female neutered. She is in heat now but our Male (even so he is very interessted) does not exactly know the wheres and the hows. It is funny for us to watch but pretty frustrating for him. Our female is giving him a hart time as well, everytime he is almost there, she sits down or growls at him. We don't want to force it and just take it whenever it should happen, if it wouldl take another year or two that is fine with us as well.
However may be somebody has similar experience and figured out how to help out nicely. Thanks (:

Have you heard that PETA is going to use Michael Vick in a series of adds as a spokesman for them!?

Isn't that something like Osama being a spokesman for the JDL?

This is regarding my pitbull mix. For the last few days, her hair has been shedding like crazy.. I have also noticed these (click link for pics) scabs and pink spots especially around hind legs and neck area. She has always been allergic to almost anything (grass, treats, her bed etc etc) and have broken out in hives before. However this time, there are no hives, just tremondous amount of hair shedding and those pink spots I have mentioned. She is eating regularly (recently switched to timberwolf ocean blue formula due to her allergies), energy is normal and does not seem to be in any pain. I will be taking her to a vet in couple of days but can any of you shed any light on this? I am also wondering do pitbulls shed hair during changing of seasons? I'm afraid she is gonna have no hair left at this rate! Could this be a mange of some kind? Thanks in advance for your answers.

Every month, we have to battle with our dog to get her Frontline/Advantix flea and tick medicine on. We've tried everything--coaxing her with treats, trying to hold her still while we squirt the medicine on her back, sneak attacking her . . everything. But she's absolutely terrified -- she'll run away when she sees the medicine. When we try holding her, she's squirming so much that it hurts both the person holding her and herself. And she's big enough that she's definitely not easy to hold down (she's over 50 lbs).

I'm at a loss. What's the best way to teach her the medicine won't hurt her? And the best way to put it on? Thanks for any tips.

My German Shepherd is having only one puppy, is it normal that they have one puppy, and if so will there be any complications? A vet told me that she was gonna have to deliver the puppy on a certain day for the sake of the puppy.. is she trying to make a quick buck or is it true? What could go wrong if I just let her do it on her own?
