Dogs - June 2007

I have a 7-8 month old Cocker Spaniel puppy who keeps scratching at her ear. She had been doing it often now and it is starting to turn red. I have also noticed that her ear has a slight rancid smell. I know they are prone to ear infections but maybe her ear is just ichy?

My Golden Retriever is about 2 years old!
But when I open the gate....
My Golden Retriever will run outside immediately!
I even can't stop it!
It has gone for so many times already!
and it was always fighting with my puppy!
and it was really hard to train!
Can anybody help me solving this problem?

Okay so i have a wonderful little Chihuahua named Roxy. She is such a sweetheart. She never bites and hardly ever barks. She is very calm. She hangs out with my uncles dog who is a Pit Bull and my grandpas dog who is a German Shepeard. She is not scared of them even though they are much bigger than her. They have tons of fun together. She has graduated from Obedienced School at pets mart and has been very socialized with other dogs. Well, my aunt and uncle just got a puppy and he is much smaller than the dogs she usually hangs out with but for some odd reason, she is scared to death of him! He did not do anything to hurt her, he was just smelling her and she freaked out and bit his nose!!!! Why is she so scared of him??? and how can I make it stop. Since I take her everywhere with me, they will have to see alot of each other! PLEASE HEP!!!!

For the first time last night our dog was allowed to sleep where he chose. He chose to ignore his bedding and slept laid out on the front door mat right across the door way. My immediate thought was that this was very 'pack leader'- protecting the opening to the den for the rest of the pack- does this mean it is something we should not allow to happen again?

I was wondering if anyone knows of a product that will take the smell out of my floor form my puppy going potty in a certain area. Once he dose it and even after I clean it with 409 he can still smell his sent and will go in the same spot! I don’t want him to go inside anymore. Keeping the smell of his pee in this spot makes him think that it is an ok place to go… and its not. We’re in the middle of potty training and he keeps having accidents in this one spot… as if he thinks its ok. “well I’ve don’t it here before, this is my spot, ill go here gain…” anything that you know takes the smell out.. I can’t smell it needs to be so HE cant smell it! Its hard ugly tile floor, so I need to be able to used it as a mop solution! Thank you!

I have a six wk old jack russell terrier and this is his second night here. I have him in a 35 gal tub bin that you would put clothes in.. last night he whined and whimpered and tonight he's doing the same. How long will he be doing this and should me telling him now and pushing him to stay down and be quiet help?

I found this puppy and dont know what breed she is (I think a german shepard mix) and am wondering if I should just feed her a large breed formula and if it will hurt her if I dont or if she's not a large breed will it hurt her if I do? I will feed her Innova brand either way.

My dog bites his back toes...and its more of his toenail area. Anyone know why he might be biting his toenails? I know they are kinda long and I need to get them cut. Could he be trying to cut them himself by biting it?

hey ive decided to get a new pup and a big part of its life will be made up of agility so ive narrowed a couple of breeds im interested in down but just need a little help on the big decision of which one i should get. The breeds are:

-standard poodle
-alaskan malamute
-chiuaua
-doberman
-german long-haired pointer
-german shepard

I have one dog but my mim's allergic to her so the only way I could keep her is if we get another dog that's hyper allergenic.(No dander or odors) we need help knowing wich ones are the best, so if you have one that you thinks good or just know of one that's good. please answer my question!!

I am watching my friends jack russel for a week. its day three now i need some hepl with sleep time

It seems he doesnt want to sleep at night he is always up and doing things, i need to leave him in my room because he isnt allowed downstairs a night . I bring a pee pad in my room and his bed, but he does not seem to sleep and always pee's on the rug or barks. Can dogs see in the dark? should i leave a little light source? or is he just peeing on the rug on purpose?

what would make him go to sleep?

So I just got back from the vet today, and the doctor told me that my Balto is going to die in a couple of days :(. He is really sick but he lived a long life (12 years). I was crushed , but I am trying to make a to-do list with my dog.

He cant really eat or walk so any ideas? Or you had experienced what I have been through..what are your opinions and advice. Dont really know what to do :(...

Tomorrow I am giving him a really car ride since he loves it. Wished I could fed him something like steaks but he wont eat :(

We have a 4 month old pug and he tends to chew on his paws. He has been chewing on his thumbs and mostly on the front paws. His chews on his paws until they are pink and a little bit swolen.

Why is he doing this and is there any way to stop him? Will he grow out of it?


He also doesn't this do this constantly. He just does it once in a while.

Months ago. She showed no signs of aggression. Was I petting her too much ? Any ideas how to treat this ? She clipped my face twice,by my eye and scalp.I have raised welts, sore, but no blood. My dog died four months ago to cancer and i feel like its my fault that she died. I fed her the right food, took her for walks, and i loved that dog more than my family. I still think about her and its not fair that she is not here. INot fair they live very long. I cry very hard when i think about her. Sometimes i think i can feel her around me. My dog was a pretty white boxer that my sister found in another town and the owners let her go on purpose. My parents did not want her but i took her instead. I just wish there was a cure for cancer. I am gonna go to college and study to be a vet. Who knows maybe someday i might find the cure. R.I.P Moose.

i heard that microchipping helps in case a dog gets lost. how much does it cost? does it hurt having the microchip implanted? how is it done? will my dog need another microchip if we move to another state?

My puppy is barely 3 months and he just got the distemper virus. He also got pnemonia(sp?) and seizures (turns out he was sick since I got him). The vet says there is less than a 50% chance he'll make it, and if he does it's a possiblity he might be handicapped! He's currently in the hospital... but it's $1000 a day and I can't keep him there forever. It's really heartbreaking for me. I'm trying to keep him in the hospital as long as I can though his condition isn't changing much. Please give me any advice. Thanks.
