My dog bites his back toes...and its more of his toenail area. Anyone know why he might be biting his toenails? I know they are kinda long and I need to get them cut. Could he be trying to cut them himself by biting it?

You are exactly right. He knows that they are too long so he is cutting them down himself. You should keep them trimmed so they don't get so long. If its an inside dog be careful about letting them get too long, they can easily get caught in the carpet and break a toe!

I'm not a qualified canine psychologist but dogs are so similar to humans in many respects that I have a theory . My dog use to do the same thing. She was very sweet, shy and introverted and a weebit nervous. Had to put her on medication during 4th of July and didn't take her off if it until all loud noises stopped. I think it's like a human that chews their nails.

I have taken Ed to two vets to see about his nail issues. They said that there is no sign of an infection or fungus and even sent some clippings and scrappingd for testing.
I have inquired about removing the dews, but both vets advised against removal of the dew claws.
At this point I think it is a physological issue with Ed. He seems to get distressed and starts chewing at his toes. He won't chew on the skin, just the nail. He makes them sharp again, and makes them look all nasty and unkept.
My friend suggested a no chew spray, but all that has done is given my Dog a bad taste in his mouth and still chews up his nails.
Any other ideas of what could be done to help make him stop would be helpful. He'll stop only when I tap at him or touch his feet, then he resituates himself to hide all of his feet under neath of himself.

Most likely. If a dog nails get too long, they can start to hurt when the dog walks, or it can just irritate them. He's most likely trying to bite them off so it can stop hurting.

I suggest cutting them.

Also, be sure to check to see if it's infected, or anything is stuck in his toes.

My mother-in-laws dog does that, the reason she does it is beause of an allergy...it itches so she tries to itch it by biting.
