Will he eat ice cream? Take him to the "magic window" and buy him a small ice cream.
Sit with him outside, just you and him on a blanket, enjoying him.
Does he have any special human friends? Take him for a last visit. I did that with my huskador.

I'm soo sorry to hear abt this... I know you must be really upset cos I have had several faithful pets who passed away. Here are few things to help you out....
* Spend time with Balto.
* Make sure he is comfortable.
* Talk to him... Even sing for him. Although he may not understand exactly what you say He will appreciate you being there =)
* Give him massage, tummy rub and even a light grooming session.
* However at the same time respect his wishes. If you feel it wants to be alone (eg. growls at you) don't violate his comfort. Let him be.
* Do not exhaust him too much.
* Take some pictures of him to remember him in case you don't have many with you.
I know it will be hard once he is gone. 12 years is a long time. But be happy for all the good times and be happy for giving him a good life. I'm sure he was blessed to have had a master like u taking care of him =)
I have included a link about how to cope with losing a pet. I hope it will help you before and after his passing =)

Is he an indoor dog? If so take him outside for a sun bath, pet him all you can where he likes to be petted. Try a little piece of steak, sometimes they will still try to eat what they love. I just lost my ferret today, before he died I took him out for a sun bath, petted him, put him on his favorite blanket. He couldn't walk or eat either.
If he's an outdoor dog, then let him stay in the house for a bit... I'm sure you are already keeping him indoors by now., so probably the sun bath, car ride that doesn't go to the vets will be great!

I'm so, so sorry about Balto. I know how it hurts to lose a pet you care so deeply for. I'd take him on that car ride, maybe propping him up a bit so he can stick his nose out of the window. After that, I think I'd just lay him on your bed and lie beside him. What he wants more than anything is to be near you. Make sure he doesn't seem in pain (call the vet).

I'm sorry to hear about the coming loss of your best friend( to many of us,they become our children)Just try to do the things he likes to do( and is able to do without pain, stress or over tiring him out) and show him all the love you can. The car ride sounds like a great idea.Take as many pictures of him as you can, it will help you cope with the loss when the time comes. And if you want to feed him a steak ,but he won't eat it, try to puree one in the blender and see if it would be easier for him to eat it that way. just don't spice it up as it might make him sick.Again I offer my condolences and say just love him up for the time he has left.

I am very sorry to hear that about your dear Balto :( It's amazing how a dog impacts your life for the better. I suggest just setting out a blanket and bonding with him, mostly talking to him. You'd be amazed at how much it comforts him to just hear your voice. Also gather all the pictures and memorbillia you have shared and create an album for when he does pass. Remember... he'll be waiting for you at the golden bridge :) Good luck!

Just make him as comfortable as possible. Will riding in a car be stressful for him in a bad way since he isn't able to eat and is quite sick, it sounds like?
Try offering him some "Frosty Paws" doggie ice cream which is sold in stores like Randall's and Kroger's. Just call a local area grocery store that is a big chain store, even a super target, and see if they have it in stock. It's cold and refreshing, light.
Fix a soft comfortable place for him to lay and offer him water or ice-cubes to lick on, pet him gently. Let him lay his head in your lap if he wants to. I am so sorry to hear he is passing soon, but here is a site you have probably heard of that can be supportive to you at this time:

I am so sorry! I kind of went through something similar!
Our Lab was dying of cancer, and I had scheduled the appointment to put him down the next day. We went for a car ride, and I went through the drive thru at Mcdonalds for him. He ate a hamburger!I let him eat absolutely anyhting he wanted.
Honestly, all your dog wants is for you to be there. Give him lots of love.

Beach or park, carry him out to his favorite spot in the yard, sit with him and talk talk talk about what a good dog and friend he has been and all the wonderful times you have had together. Cry in his fur. Feed him a popsicle. Sleep with him, even if you have to lie on the floor.
Above all tell him over and over that you love him.
Best to you both, know this is difficult.

If he is that sick think about putting him down. Take him to the vet and stay with him so yours is the last face he will see. Tell him you love him and kiss him goodbye. This may sound harsh but it he is that sick then this is the last greatest thing you can do for him. It is hard but needs to be done. My heart goes out to you and good luck
