While writing a paper to be submitted to a local city council on the pros and cons of BSL, I came accross some startling facts. According to the CDC statistics on dog attacks and fatalities, in the past twenty years there have been over 100 fatalities and over one thousand reported attacks by APBT and similar breeds. In comparrison, there has only ever been one fatalitiy by a labrador, and that dog had been running wild (feral). There has been only two fatalities by a golden, one was rabid, the other was a strangulation. There are other breeds listed in the stats, but the top three contenders are APBT, Rotts, and sheppards. If the APBT is supposed to be such a gentle breed, how do you explain the statistic. These are actual stats gathered by the CDC from hospitals and health departments nationwide.

My pomeranian is being spayed on October the 5th but the vet is concerned she will go into heat. She was born March 17th, so is about 6 months old. Do smaller dogs go into heat earlier than bigger ones?

Next year I want to take my dog to visit my sister in Italy. I know she will need a rabies vaccination (The dog, NOT my sister!!!).... is that it? What vaccinations do they need so they can have a passport? She has the "normal" vaccinations, the ones all puppy's have. Has anyone had the rabies vaccination for their dog? How many jabs is it and how long does it take for them to be "immune" and protected?

She is a small dog, Bichon Frise, would she be allowed to travel on the plane with me (hand luggage) or would she have to go in the back with the suit cases and luggage? Are smaller dogs allowed in with the people ( as hand held luggage) if they are in a carrier / crate / flight container thing? I think I saw some sort of bag you can use to carry small dogs in for domestic flights?

Has anyone done this with their dog? Is it terribly expensive? If you have the passport and vaccinations all sorted out does that mean no quarantine?

Thanks for any useful info!

We have a 12 wk old lhasa/bichon mix who has had great potty manners! In the 3 weeks we have had him he has only had a handful of accidents which of course, our fault.I am home a lot so I am constantly working on training-my question is,I take him out ALOT sometimes I know when he has to go,he will go to the door or sniff around,or he just walk out if it's open. But a lot of the time I take him out just because I think it's time. Sometimes he will go,sometimes he'll sniff for a 1/2 hour or he will run back to the door to go in.He is a constant sniffer,he will sniff the grass right off the ground if he could.I do everything right-rewarding, correction, etc.My question is am I doing him an injustice by rushing him out every 10/20 minutes or should I lay off him so he learns to signal us everytime? The weather will be cold here soon,so his time out will be all business soon. I know I should still take him out frequently but will he learn to signal us if I am always whisking him out?

HElp me please! I have a miniature Pinscher, she's 3 years old & never had fleas...UNTIL NOW. She only weighs 3 lbs & I bathe her with Hartz Flea shampoo, but I don't think it's working b/c I think the fleas have found a home in my carpet so after her bath, they re-infest her. How long can they live in carpet without a "living" host??? Also, can humans be a host?

I mean lets be real here, the cat population would become extinct if every cat born was neutered.
I have noticed that when myself and others have posted about cats being pregnant some people are so cruel and nasty about cats who aren't neutered.
Yes if my cat is pregnant she will be neutered after the kittenes are weaned and im sure others wouold be too, not every1 would let there cat be pregnant constantly. Fair enough be critical of the people who do.
This comment hardly ever arrises with dogs so why???

I know that lethargy can be a sign of illness, but it appears to be the only symptom.

He has been lazy for a few months, preferring to stay stationary on the bottom rather than swimming around. In the past couple of weeks it has gotten worse. The other day i can home to find him on his side on the bottom. I QT'd him with a heavy dose of salt, which seemed to perk him up, so i put him back in the tank. He has been swimming upright, but always along the bottom and recently he hasn't even been coming up to eat. he is starting to get skinny. Other than this, he shows no physical signs of illness or infection.

I have test kits to check the water, so i know that ammonia, nitrites and nitrates are all fine, and i do frequent water changes. Plus, his tankmate is perfectly healthy, so it doesn't really seem like a water quality issue.

I am worried that he may die. I'm thinking about picking up some sinking pellets to see if he will eat on the bottom.

What else can I do?

I just have a few questions...
I had a cat who had fleas.I've been dealing with fleas for a month now.
I sprayed the house then came back to vaccum. I noticed a few fleas jumping around. So, me being neurotic, I ripped out all the carpets in the house(3 bedrooms).I washed almost all the clothes and blankets in the house. I sprayed again with stuff from the hardware store. I vaccumed every second day. I still saw fleas so about 2 weeks ago my cousin gave me a can of VET KEM from a vet's office. It has IGR in it and it says it has 7 months residual action against pre-adult fleas. I am still vaccuming every second day.Matresses, floors, couches, curtains, everything in the house.I wash the bedding every time I vaccum.I am still seeing fleas.
What is the amount of Borax and salt I should use. I've read to spray matresses, so I mix it with water, right?
I am frustrated! I really don't know how much more vaccuming I can do!!
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

My cat likes nothing better than having a sleep on my lap and as soon as I sit down he dives on me for a cuddle, most of the time I'm only going to be sitting down for a minute but stay for ages because he looks so cosy, but as soon as my boyfriend gets in from work at night my cat jumps off me and gets in his own bed. Why is this? We got the cat together and my boyfriend (the cats dad!) is always nice to him and plays with him and cuddles him, why doesn't he come near me when he is home? I don't want my kitty to think I don't want him or feel left out
