HElp me please! I have a miniature Pinscher, she's 3 years old & never had fleas...UNTIL NOW. She only weighs 3 lbs & I bathe her with Hartz Flea shampoo, but I don't think it's working b/c I think the fleas have found a home in my carpet so after her bath, they re-infest her. How long can they live in carpet without a "living" host??? Also, can humans be a host?

I would go to the vet and get appropriate weight and get the medication of whatever your vet recommends. Advantage works wonderfully, it will kill fleas in your carpet as well as on your dog. To answer your question about humans being a host? Yes, they most certainly can. They can even cause an infection problem for you, that could require a visit to your Dr. I suggest you get to the vet! Good luck!

They can live a very long time in the carpet, dormant, until they get a host - and yes, it can be human.

You need to get those fleas out of the carpet, you need to change all the dog's bedding and any blankets by washing them. Vacuum the carpets and sofa, then throw away the bag.

Make sure to put Frontline or Advantage on your dog every single month - that works, flea baths do NOT and can harm your dog.

Do NOT use any Hartz products:

Get some Frontline from your vet to treat the dog. Then get a flea bomb for your house. You'll need to leave the house, and take the dog with you, for a few hours. The bomb will fog the house and kill the fleas in the carpet.

Wash the dog's bedding.

Remove the bag from the vacuum cleaner. If you've sucked up fleas they can be living and reproducing in there.

Get a good outdoor flea product and spray your yard.

Try to keep your dog away from any dogs that may carry fleas.

If you come in contact with a dog that may have fleas, remove and wash your clothes before interacting with your dog.

Get your dog on a Frontline style topical flea treatment. This will take care of the fleas that get on your dog for a whole month. Be sure to discuss with your vet, where you acquire the meds from, how recently your dog was bathed and when you can apply the treatment. Usually 2 days before and after treatment, a dog should not have a bath, as it removes the oils in the skin which are needed to help the topical treatment spread around properly.

You will need to treat your whole house with flea products. Beds, carpet, furniture, clothes, everything. Don't forget the vacuum bag. Unless everyone moves out of your house, the fleas will always be able to find a host. Also start your dog on flea prevention to stop the problem before it starts in the future.

Hartz are pretty ineffective. You need to go to the Vet and buy a good flea/tick product. Also, get the flea bombs from your Vet, remove all pets and make arrangements to take your pets and leave for about 3 hours while you set the bombs off in your house to kill the fleas in your carpet and house.

Good luck and this should solve your problem.

You may to have to treat the whole house with a flea bomb. , cleaning especially where your dog sleeps and eats. Wash all it's bedding. You will need to vacuum very well. Make sure to dump your vacuum bag or container away from your house as soon as you are done vacuuming.. Then you need to give your dog a bath and when she dry put on a flea topical. We use Frontline plus and Advantix. Fleas can not live on humans. But they sure can bite. They can travel from place to place on peoples clothes. If you house is totally infested or you can not seem to get rid of them you may need a professional exterminator to come in .

The fleas will just continue to multiply. Get your dog frontline or advantage to begin with. Then they have carpet stuff and flea bombs at your local pet store or department store. Either put the powder on the carpet or set off a bomb, and use the advantage or frontline on the dog. This should rid your house of infestation, and the frontline or advantage will keep them off your dog.

Fleas cant live long without a host. try going to the store and looking for something to put on your carpet, i think they have a powder type thing, or you can also steam clean your carpeting and furniture. They usually wont host on humans, because the fleas your dog has aren't human fleas. Also: get flea shampoo from your VET.
