My pomeranian is being spayed on October the 5th but the vet is concerned she will go into heat. She was born March 17th, so is about 6 months old. Do smaller dogs go into heat earlier than bigger ones?

No, actually toy breeds usually experience heat later. I have Yorkies , I've had them have their first heat at 11 months, one at 9 months & one of my females had her first heat at 14 months. Your dog can still be spayed while in estrus, so don't worry. The spay surgery will just be a little more expensive.

Get your pet quality pom spayed. Not every dog cycles on the 6 month average. And she may have had a silent heat for all you know. And what btw is soooo special about your pom that you feel she needs to be bred? What titles has she won? Has she come back with excellent health clearances? Seriously what makes her any different than all the other byb and puppymill bred poms out there? A reputable breeder wouldn't have sold you a show/breeding quality dog if you didn't know what you are doing and considering this dog is two if you knew what you were doing you'd have your answer already because you'd have spent years learning from other breeders. Get her fixed.

Most females start their seasons anywhere between 5 months and a year with the majority starting around 6 months. I would try and get your girl in sooner for the spay.

No....females go into season generally between 6 month and a year for the first time. Some start later than a year and a very few start before that 6 month mark. It's possible your female could go in before her surgery, just have to keep fingers crossed that she won't.

Some females go into heat cycle before others and as young as 7 months, but most are around 12 months old before they have their first heat cycle.
