We are a limited income family. My husband works full time and I am a stay at home mom (4 children). I've heard from several people that there are government grants out there to help you fix up your home. I have called everywhere I know to find help and have had no success. We own our home. It's a large victorian home with alot of fixing up needed. (The roof is in bad need.) Anyone know of any such grants?

I bought a house and the roofing looks good. Seller says its a newer roof. I am putting a floor down in the attic with plywood an noticed frost on the boards, and as it warms up with the heat going up from downstairs it melts an dries up.I have three roof vents on the back side of the house and one in each of the two peaks at the ends. Should I close them or leave them open for the winter?People tell me the house has to breath and thats why the vents are there. But im afraid of the roof rotting in time and I cant afford a new roof right now. The house is 850 square ft built in 1954. Attic floor has insulation but none in the roof area. What do i do?

I have recently discovered an attempted renovation from a previous owner (missed by the home inspector :( ) who intentionally cut about 14 inches out of a floor joist. The joist is probably 30 feet long and the missing section is almost at the end, starting just a few inches in from an outside wall. Is this possible to repair and how could would it be done? I have placed a jackpost to shore up support underneath the 'hanging' end of the joist. Thanks!

I have an old victorian house that has 7 chimneys. None of them are lined yet. I am not looking to line them all, just one or two. My biggest problem is that my chimneys are about 45 feet tall. The brick is in good condition, but I am sure that they will probably have to be relined. I didn't know if there was a per linear foot price, or if it was more involved.THanks

I live in the state of New York (Upstate)...I live in a apartment. Which is a house with 2 apartment, one upstairs one down stairs. There is only one entrance to get into the apartments...which is also your exit as well. But before you can enter the apartment...You have to go on the porch. The porch used to have two post/banister. One of them has been broken for many months. And the owner/landlord haven’t fix it yet, he just laid it alongside of the porch. I understand he has lot of iron in the fire(other things to do)such as take care of the other houses and apartments he has. Because I know he owns a lot of buildings and stuff. But it would only take 10-15 of his time to fix. A few mornings ago. I was coming down the steps, and happened to slip on some ice/snow. I could of have some support if the post/banister was there, but which it wasn’t, and in result of that. I broke my arm. Is that my fault. Would that be the landlord responsibility to fix that or was that the tenants responsibility ?

I cannot quite describe this smell that comes from my furnace vents and fills the house. Maybe sewer smell, but not quite as offensive as that, just a very unique smell. I am worried it is something serious, does anyone have any advice?

The windows are cold and I can feel cold air coming in through tiny gaps around the windows. Great stuff would probably be difficult to squish into such small gaps. What are my other options? These are the white double pane windows that flip in for cleaning.

You should not have these in your house. Also why do guys hang their clothes the wrong way (inside out and backwards). Can't we just have peace in the closet?

I reconnected 2 ceiling mounted light fixtures that are controlled (on/off) at 3 separate locations - 3 different switches. I am getting no power - no nothing! What did I do wrong? I reconnected every wire(s) as they were when I disconnected them! The circuit is open somewhere I guess.
