Without knowing the purpose, certainly many answers here will be valid.

Hammering suggests a general distressed look, as well as FEEL, though I can't imagine that feeling it is much of a big deal.

There are so many options in this, rough sanding/belt sander; a grinder; scraping the grain with a knife,screwdriver, etc.; chisel;

I'm curious to know what the eventual use is meant to be.

The answer could be as simple as making it wet and letting the wood swell up the grain of the wood. if you realy need alot of texture, beat it with a chain. this is how alot of distressed wood is done. depending on the type of wood. pine will swell easy but hard woods wont as easy. if the look is not important, try a spray texture or textured paint.

Use a palm sander for a nice smooth surface . Use a hammer and chizzle for a grooved rough surface.

burn it with a torch then use a wire brush to remove the burned wood , the summer growth rings are softer and will recess faster than the winter rings it makes for a real cool texture
