Our house os about 100 years old and I think still has the original wiring. It's wired entirely in 12 gauge wire and it's all in metal tubing--not sure what to call it. We still have fuses, not breakers. The wiring coming OUT of the box is still 220, and then it splits into 120 at junctions boxes. The way the fuses are, and I hope I'm explaing this right--I'm no electrician!-- is this: there are two fuses for every circuit, the black wire goes to one, and the white wire goes to the second. Someone told me they used do wiring like that on boats and ships a long time ago, if that helps explain. They are all 30 amp fuses, which I know is rather high. Considering the house has been here 100 years without burning down, and we've been here 3 years without any problem, so I'm guessing it's probably fine, but here is my concern. With 30 amp fuses, is it possible the wire could catch fire before the fuse blew? Or does the 12 gauge wire and the way its wired make higher amp fuses ok?

I live in the state of New York (Upstate)...I live in a apartment. Which is a house with 2 apartment, one upstairs one down stairs. There is only one entrance to get into the apartments...which is also your exit as well. But before you can enter the apartment...You have to go on the porch. The porch used to have two post/banister. One of them has been broken for many months. And the owner/landlord haven’t fix it yet, he just laid it alongside of the porch. I understand he has lot of iron in the fire (other things to do) such as take care of the other houses and apartments he has. Because I know he owns a lot of buildings and stuff. But it would only take 10-15 of his time to fix. A few mornings ago. I was coming down the steps, and happened to slip on some ice/snow. I could of have some support if the post/banister was there, but which it wasn’t, and in result of that. I broke my arm. Is that my fault. Would that be the landlord responsibility to fix that or was that the tenants responsibility ? These are listed in the rental agreement

Tenant Responsibility: Good housekeeping is expected of everyone. Tenant agrees to keep quarters clean and in a sanitary condition. The tenants agree not to permit any deterioration or destruction to occur while they are occupying the property. They agree to maintain the walls, woodworks, floors, furnishings, fixtures and appliances, windows, screens, doors, plumbing and heating fixtures, as well as the general structure and appearance of the property.

Tenant To maintain Dwelling Unit:
1.) Comply with all obligations primarily imposed upon tenants by applicable provisions of building codes materially affecting health and safety.
2.)Keep that part of the premises that he occupies and uses as clean and safe as the condition of the premises permit.
3.) Dispose from this dwelling unit all ashes, rubbish, garbage, and other waste in a clean and safe manner. No items are to be placed on the front porches without permission by the Landlord.
4.) Keep all plumbing fixtures in the dwelling unit or used by the tenant as clean as their condition permits.
5.)Use in a reasonable manner all electrical, plumbing, sanitary, heating, ventilating, other facilities and appliances in the premises.
6.) not deliberately or negligently destroy, deface, damage, impair, or remove any part of the premises or knowingly permit any person to do so.
7.) Conduct himself and require other persons on the premises with his consent to conduct themselves in a manner that will not disturb his neighbor’s peaceful enjoyment of the premises.

Residents warrants that he/she will meet above conditions in every respect, and acknowledges that failure to perform the obligations herein stipulated will be considered ground for termination of this agreement and loss of the deposits.

Alterations: Tenants shall make no alterations, decorations, additions or improvement in or to the premises without landlords’ prior written consent.

Waiver: All rights given to Landlord by this agreement shall be cumulative in addition to any laws which exist or might come into being. Any exercise of any rights by Landlord or failure to exercise any rights shall not act as wavier of those or any other rights. No statement or promise by Landlord, its agents or employees, as tenancy, repairs, amount of rent to be paid, or other terms and conditions shall be binding unless it is put in writing and made a specific part of this agreement.

Could You explain to me if he would still be responsible for my fall and injury? In “Tenants Responsibility” it says “woodworks” does that mean the porch too since it is made out of wood? Does this means that the fall and injury is my fault?

It is single digit weather right now with subzero windchills. It looks to be staying that way for another 5 days or so. Yesterday when we went to do a load of laundry, the washer would not come if a cold cycle was involved. Only hot water would come out, even if it was a warm/cold setting. I'm assuming that the pipe holding the cold water has frozen. We live in a slab home and I have no clue if anything has burst or not. Everything looks normall. The washer and dryer are in our kitchen, next to the kitchen counter up against an exterior wall and is very cold (didn't insulate the dryer vent as we should have) When I peak behind the dryer, I see a long pipe on the floor extending from the kitchen cabinets. There is one small spot on the pipe that looks white, maybe frost? All the other cold water sources are working fine . Sinks, shower, everything but the cold setting on the washer, and the outside water spigot (hook a garden hose up to). I have no idea where to begin!

Mold is forming on vertical blinds in my conservatory... and there is lots of condensation on the inside of the windows.

Why is this happening?
and how can we prevent it?
and how to remove the mold already on the blinds?

I seem to remember that you could buy small discs that changed colour if CO was present. Now all I can find are alarms that cost anything up to £40. I know you can't put a price on health, but when you are on a limited income the price is important!

The water in my apartment is leaving red stains where it stands. its not orange like rust, but red as if i spilled some cherry koolaid and couldn't get all of the stain out. it shows up on the counter as a very light pink, around the bottoms of bottles in my shower, and even blood red around the pump cap of my girlfriend's face wash, which is also in the shower. any ideas as to what is causing this and how to treat it?

I have a salt water pool and had a pool party last weekend.. well untill then I had been able to keep the water perfectly clean and balanced..but since the party the water has gone murkey.. I have been putting the pump on twice as often since and cleaned the filters twice since when I usually only have to clean them once every two -three weeks or so.. and have had the kreepy krawley in every night also.. Well I went to the pool supply shop this morning and she tested my pool water and told me to add 500g of chlorine & 2 stabeliser tablets.. which I have done..8 hours later the water is still murkey.. it was a 40º celcius day today and the night is still boiling..and I have some friends coming around soon to hop in the pool.. will the water be safe to swim in?? and when will the water go clear again??? I asked the pool supply lady she just said if I was concerned just not to put our heads under??

We've been waiting almost 2 months to have a rear door handle raised. No-one seems to want to fit a roller-door to our garage either. The town is short on tradesmen.
