I seem to remember that you could buy small discs that changed colour if CO was present. Now all I can find are alarms that cost anything up to £40. I know you can't put a price on health, but when you are on a limited income the price is important!

Your second last statement is the best!!!!!!!
England is not cheap...I was there last Feb and went to a Starbucks for a coffee and a muffin. It came out to about 3 1/2 pounds [don't know where the key is for the symbol on my keyboard , sorry (hey that's another good question)] It didn't sound like much until I was on the sidewalk outside the store and did the conversion and realized I just spent $7 Canadian on a coffee and a muffin. I took two and half hours to finish...I was makin' that baby last a long time!!!!! It would have only cost me 3 1/2 dollars here. Half the price!
Awsome underground system!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah, CO2 det. Here, a cheap one would cost about $40 CAN. But a good one will be about $60.
Your health is number one. On this issue, I don't compromise.
this is an insurance policy. BE SAFE...and I'm not a 'bobbie' or a fireman.
The plug in kind will be ok if you can't hardwire one in. It should have battery back up (check to make sure.)

I have just bought a carbon monoxide detector from Argos and yes it was not cheap cost me £30.00 . However it has given me piece of mind so was well worth the expense . Like you I am on a limited budget but felt i needed to buy a decent one . I have previously used disc and a chart detector which are meant to change colour etc but to be honest I never had much faith in them actually working.

My advice would be try to save up for a decent detector not easily done I understand . Maybe you have a birthday coming up or a kind family member who would loan you the money for one.

We have a contract with British Gas for our boiler, the engineer came in on one occasion to do a repair and advised use as a matter of safety to have a carbon monoxide detector British Gas sold us one of their own, and gave us advise on the best location

Slightly more expensive than a discount shop but good quality.

£45.

There are 2 forms of CO detector, the electronic ones and a chemical one which looks like a dot on a piece of cardboard which changes colour when it is exposed to CO.

If in doubt get your boiler seviced by a Corgi registered repair chap or talk to your local fire station.

Try contacting your local fire station, (not 999!) they can often give good advice on these issues.
