The water in my apartment is leaving red stains where it stands. its not orange like rust, but red as if i spilled some cherry koolaid and couldn't get all of the stain out. it shows up on the counter as a very light pink, around the bottoms of bottles in my shower, and even blood red around the pump cap of my girlfriend's face wash, which is also in the shower. any ideas as to what is causing this and how to treat it?

i think it may be a combination of hard water, rust, and soap scum. i get a pinkish stain in my shower. the soap scum keeps it from getting enough oxygen to turn orange. good luck, hope this helps.

This "could" be red oxide or iron bacteria, a mineral of hard water. One good test, does potato's turn black or dark when boiled in this water. The starch will act as a buffer with the iron and turn the potato black or, a variety of black shade.
Another is a red algae and with this I would get the water tested. Good luck.

Where is this water coming from? if you have a leak, it is most probably coming from rusty pipework.. Iron pipework was used a lot years ago.
