I've tried adjusting the water valve, tightening any loose washers, and it doesn't seem to affect the noise.

The noise sounds like it's coming from the wall by the supply pipe.

The toilet is a Kohler Wellworth.

Sounds like it's probably water hammer. I've read from many sources that it is potentially damaging, so is it really ok to leave it as it is?

If I use the faucet before or during a flush, that noise doesn't occur.

try opening the angle stop (the valve)located at the wall open more/all the way. Its likely not opened up enough and you're getting a water hammer

Sounds like your house's water pressure is pretty high, causing the on-off action of the ball cock (fluidmaster 400A) to cause a slight water hammer. The only thing you can try to fix this is to try closing off the angle valve at the wall, not all the way, but enough to restrict some of the flow going to the toilet. This will make the fill cycle take longer, but may help the noise problem.

Sounds like "water hammer". This can be caused by anything from improper water pressure to an inadequately anchored pipe in the wall. I would have a plumber look at it (altho I think it's probably a poorly anchored pipe, particularly if it's just the toilet that does it) In that case you have to go into the wall and anchor the pipe (you may be better off just putting up with it)

the problem might be your water pressure when you flush it relieves the pressure all at once causing your pipes to bang your best pressure is between 60-75lbs.you have to adjust the pressure the pressure reducing valve which is your watter main turn the bolt in increase and out to reduce the pressure it may be next to main shut off

Probably your flush handle hitting the inside of the lid, there is a piece of rubber that goes to the actuator....it's easy to adjust...just shorten it a little at a time till it's fixed.

Take the toilet back, and buy yourself a KOHLER WELLWOTH. Best toilet you'll ever own. Home Depot.
