First is the pilot light lit? I'd check and see if it's the thermal coupler, it's stem like looking gadget that is attached to a small copper line(approx.3/32") that is by the pilot light . This can be bought locally at a hardware store usually.another trouble shooting area to check is the thermostat if it was working before it's possible but unlikely.Definitely have someone in the heater field check it out, basically they are easy to repair

Clogged nozzle, clogged oil filter, electrical ignition problem, electrical fan problem (continuing to run after thermostat is satisfied). Did you let the tank get empty? If so, you may have picked up water or excess condensation in the filter.

If it's a gun type furnace, then the flame apparently hasn't ignited. There can be several hard to diagnose reasons for this so it's best to contact a qualified repair person.

check to see if the pilot is lit. in a forced hot water system, make sure there is water in the boiler. no matter what, get it checked; be sure you don't have carbon monoxide forming.
