Thinking about selling our house and need to know the best things to do to get more money out of it!

Our walls must have like 10 coats of paint on them and they have a rough egg-shell texture. When I crack-fill and sand nail holes it leaves a smooth spot in that area. Do you think priming the entire room would help prevent the uneven texture of smooth spots and egg-shell texture? I don't think it would work, but my b/f thinks it might help. I don't want to do it if it will be a waste of time/energy/money. Any tips would be useful. Thanks.

Currently our household water softener outdoor unit is plugged into the A/C's outdoor unit, drawing electricity from it rather than from its own socket.

I didn't know this and just found out from the workers who are here installing a new A/C system. I called my husband about it and he knew... he says he was told about it by the water softener company and that previous A/C repairmen have also advised him that the softener doesn't draw much power and that it won't affect anything.

But it just sounds iffy to me to have such a large appliance piggybacked onto another one like that.

Please let me know if you're an electrician or work with major appliances! Thanks in advance. :)

Currently my stairs are carpeted, but the cat has ruined the carpet, not to mention someone managed to have spilt bleach on the top landing of the hall. I've lifted the carpet in a few spots and it appears that the stairs are hardwood (the house is an old victorian). Would wooden refinished stairs be better than fully carpeted stairs or a combination of wood with a carpet runner be better?

The problem I see with hardwood is that it would be more slippery and the carpet would be much quieter, but hardwood stairs are elegant looking.

We bought a house in Febuary 2007. It is an older house, built in the 20's. We started noticing a smell coming from the back bedroom of our house, within days of moving in. To me it smells like a sewer gas leak. I have found out from neighbors that the people living here before us had the same problem. This smell comes & goes at least once a day. It doesn't stay all day, I can get rid of it if I open the windows and air out the house, then after closing the windows it will not stink again until sometime the next day or day after that. It is only in the back room. The kitchen and bathroom walls all connect to this bedroom. I've had three different plumbing companys come out to check all plumbing, some plumbing company's have come out more than once. They all say something different and fix something but the smell is back the very next day. Some of the plumbers have just said they have no idea what it is. I have one baby and a 3 year old & I'm worried itcould be harmful to my children!

So, what is roughly the same size as a mid-sized earthworm (3-4 inches), but is darker (brown) and slightly flattened with a small 'flare' at one end (mouth?) and possibly some dark streaks on it's body, moves slowly, leaves a slug-like slime trail. Was curled up when I found it, but moving.
It is obviously not a slug, yet it seems more closely related to a slug than an earthworm, and it was definitely NOT something I want to run across on my dining room carpet ever again. :)

insect or something crawling around on your paper. So small that you would probably not notice it at all. Its happened to me a couple of time, what are those really tiny things? its about 0.1 inches long... and why do i always see it on paper (usually my notebooks). Once it happened on my bio lab book and once on my organic notebook and once in my organic book and now on my physics notebook. Whats with the science classes? am i picking this little creature up from school or what?

I'm in the process of insularing and putting interior wall surfaces in my art studio (loft in a garage). The primary heat source this winter will be a pellet stove (outside air source for combustion air) used only while I am working in the studio. I need a space heater that will at the very least keep the space (12'x7'x24') above freezing while I am not in it. I've noticed on the baseboard heaters that they reccomend not using them in an area that is subject to high dust levels or fumes. Since most of my work is done in dry pastels and I use fixative (also mineral spirits when I paint in oils), I was concerned that I might be setting myself up for a flash fire or explosion if I installed a baseboard system.
Keep in mind that I do not have gas or propane to the building (a hopefully near future project!), so eletricity is my only choice of energy for the heat.
Any thoughts on this?

Thank you!

I'm looking for a reasonably priced, professional landscaper to redo my front yard. I have a small house, so it's a small project. I know there are a lot of lousy contractors out there... I'm also curious as to pricing and hourly fees. Thanks!

I want to fence a part of it, so my dog doesn't get into the part that has plants. I'm thinking of putting a wood fence. I want to do it myself. But have no idea how to. I was thinking i could just go to one of those wood places, buy some panels, and put them in.
Do you just dig a hole for each one to put it in? Do i need to bind them all together? should i leave space in between them?

My entertainment center measures 26 7/8" by 60 7/8" on the top with two lower shelfs measuring 11 7/8" by 60 7/8". I'm using simple corner guards for trim. I want them to fit together at 45 degree angles. I've tried twice before and the pieces were too short ( I didn't compensate for the trim's thickness) in one or both dimensions.

i'm in an apartment and my 2 yr. old scribbled on the white wood walls with a black sharpie marker. how can i get the marker off without taking the paint off? nail polish remover removes the marker, but also some paint, and mr. clean magic eraser does the same thing. i don't want to have to re-paint or get charged by my landlord.

Today we had the pest control guy come to spray our house for termites due to an infestation in the neighbourhood of late. We were advised that the spray used would cause no toxic affects to humans or animals.

We now have this strong chemical smell throughout the house, similar to the smell of formaldehyde, which is concerning me as my eyes feel like they are burning and I have a shocking headache.

Does anybody know if there are side affects from the spray ?

I have a nest of bees near one corner of my house. They seemed to be coming from a large potted artificial plant I had outside. My husband got stung, and he is allergic to their stings, so I had to use an "epi-pen" and Benadryl to keep him out of danger medically. Last night, after dark, I pulled the potted plant across the street to a ditch temporarily and got stung myself twice. I thought I had gotten rid of the problem, but now I see more bees in the original area where the plant was. A nurse at our clinic told me she had the same problem and the bees had a nest in the ground! On the advice of my son I poured some gasoline on the ground there, but I still see some bees. I don't know what to do next, as I don't want my husband to get stung again, nor anyone else. The area where they are is right where people walk to come to our door. Help, Help!
