ok we purchased a vessel sink with a pop of drain it has an overflow on it and with it came no instructions but it leaks through the overflow because there is no where for it to overflow. what am I doing wrong or did I get the wrong drain

The drainpipe tailpiece has a hole in it that needs to be positioned at the same direction as the overflow. If the tailpiece doe's not have a hole (right under the flange) it is the wrong one.
