I want to build a load bearing wall in a barn and put a mezzanine floor up. One side is a good concrete block wall for support, and on the other side my stud wall.

Are there any tables (UK) to check on what size timber to use?

The mezz floor will carry the weight of old files, furniture and stuff... quite a bit. I'll be sitting in my den below so don't want it to collapse!

Both sides of the stud will be plasterboarded. Can I use 3 x 2 or must I use bigger?

The span is 3.5m (11ft 4") and I intend using 47mm x 220mm for the joists.

They are only little, but they are sooooo creepy. Do they give off some chemical that makes us scared of them? Am I right to run screaming out of the room or should I find love in my heart for them? Uughh!

what's a good sealant / glue to apply in the part or corner where the wooden wall meets the wooden ceiling? Our guest room has this leak whenever the rains are strong and it isn't even on the top floor... Anyway, aside from having the ceiling dismantled, I've decided to just apply a sealant on the areas where I see the entry of water. Since I've already identified the water's path through the gaps, could anyone recommend a good sealant that is water tolerant and doesn't corrode/break easily? I plan to seal those gaps save for one spot. Basically, it's to reroute the leaks to just one spot so that it becomes easier to handle.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated (not involving me to dismantle / take apart anything).

I have recently posted about a water issue in my apartment that has messed up my very expensive washer. I didn't know if it was covered but I talked to the manager and asked what he was going to do about my washer and he said he is not responsible (which is correct, I found it on my lease) and offered to have a maintnance guy look at it and I said no way is one of your workers messing with my washer so don't even think about it. Today I come it to see a note "Washer and dryer ok" so I was a bit mad about it because they were not cheap and I specifically told him not to have one of his guys touch it. I know all he did was turn it on because then he would know it's not working properly. Don't get me wrong, it turns on BUT it gives an error (led display) and as of now I have clothes in my washer that I can't get out because the water level is too high. Anyways, my question is should I say something to the manager since he obviously disregarded what I said.

The previous owners of my house had planted grapevines everywhere. I have been digging and pulling them up for 10 years and yet, every spring, they come back! The roots are very deep and spreading and I'm not physically able to dig them up. They're spreading like CRAZY and the grapevine beetles are excessive, also. I want to get rid of them (vines and beetles) permanently. I don't want to use any chemicals if possible, but I will make an exception in this case. Any Ideas?

I'm looking for a queen-sized iron bed with headboard and footboard. Don't like any of the new ones in the furniture stores and have looked at flea markets, etc. Have found lots of full-sized beds but no queen sized with footboards. Any suggestions? I'm in Eastern Ky.

Isn't the whole point of "outside" the fact that it's sometimes cold? You know, it changes with the weather? Because, you know, IT'S OUTSIDE?

Also, hard scientific fact or not, aren't we all supposed to be conserving energy because of "climate change" and what-have-you?

Come on people! Just put a jumper on if it's so cold! FFS!

We are wanting to finish it but are unsure of what Building Permits we'd need... I don't think we need one to put up the partition wall in the basement... but do we need one for electrical and plumbing, could we do it all ourselves just not hook it up and have an electrician come in and do it? Does that count? Any sites or anything you have would help... oh ya I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada... THANKS!
