The fan which circulates heat from my furnace in the winter and cool air from my air conditioner in the summer resides in the basement of my ranch home. Large rectangular ducting goes up from the unit to a height of about 6 feet off the floor of the basement and then extends horizontally about 8 feet out into my crawlspace where the metal ducting ends and transitions into many insulated circular ducts which lead to various rooms in the house. My question is, just before where the rectangular metal ducting ends is a HUGE grate on the underside of the duct which during the summer seems to do nothing but dump massive amounts of cold air directly into the crawlspace. Does having a grate in this location serve any important purpose? Can it be closed off/sealed to direct more air upstairs? When outside temperatures get above 85 degrees the air conditioner can't keep the upstairs a stable temperature but the basement will feel like its in the mid 60's.

I'd like to have a vegetable garden this year. I'd like it to be as close to totally organic as possible. Problem is, I have tons of deer and I don't want them to be eating everything I'm trying to grow.

Also, what about insects? Is there anything that can be done about them?

I'll probably get it started w/ some organic, store bought soil, then begin composting for next year's fertilizer.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions?

The solid wood entertainment center had been stained a light tan, I would like it to be a dark walnut color. Should I just sand it then stain?

I'm looking for a company near Glasgow to do our driveway and I was going to go with mono block. What should I be asking these companies so I don't get ripped off? Also we want to landscape our back garden which has a steep downwards slope. We thought decking straight out over it was the best solution. Any other ideas? We would need to put up an 8ft fence if we go for decking. Do you need planning permission for that? There is only woodland behind us. Can anyone out there recommend a company for either? Many thanks.

I have heard never (from ordinary folk who have them) and every 4 years or so from people in the industry. We are pretty careful about what we put in it, but I heard that the solids can back up and ruin the leach field if we let it go too long.

Any tips?

It was once a dark walnut colored wood and now it's been painted thickly dark green. I just want it back the way it was. Is there a product or should I just sand it?

I am very excited as we are doing lots of alterations to our house at the moment - we are making our kitchen bigger, and one of the bedrooms is being made bigger and we are getting a landscape gardener to come in and do the garden, patio and spanish bbq. What are you doing?

I have brown water stains on the ceiling in my kitchen caused by a leak around a vent stack on the roof. I have repaired the leak and now need to clean up the evidence before we sell the home. I really don't want to paint the whole ceiling as it goes into the breakfast nook and living room. I also don't want to deal witn trying to match the paint and do a touch up. I put straight bleach on it and it removed 70% of the stain. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks.

These sposts are groups of small black shiny dots about the size of a sharpie dotted on the floor. I found the first group on my window sill, next on our kitchen counter, and now the third on my floor. It is shiny and grouped together. Could it be some sort of bug or animal leaving it? I live in Texas. Any ideas of what it is?

I am pregnant and got "sick" in my bedroom a few nights ago. My husband and I used a steam cleaner that we got from my in-laws after we got up the bulk. The steam cleaner had a bunch of leaks and despite the fact that we kept our windows open (brrr) and put a small fan directly on the spot, the extremely thick remained wet for days. I had it professionally cleaned yesterday, but once it dried it smelled worse! Please help!!!
