ABLEX- I need grass because my son is 1 years old and likes it outside. Him playing in rocks isn't very safe in my opinion. I don't want a lawn because everyone else does, actually, many people on our street don't have grass because of the lots and how rocky it is. We live around a lake and the land shouldn't have had a subdivision on it. We don't have neighbors because the lots beside us are so bad. We live in a very rural area.

In response to another answer: I have different size rocks in my yard, some are small pebbeles and I also have GREAT BIG boulder type rocks that are stuck in the ground and you can walk over them. I don't plan on moving those but having flowers around them, hopefully. But the others are just small granite rocks that are annoying... lol ... Most of the people in the neighborhood have leaves for a lawn. It's sad... :o(

Well thank ya'll for your replies.

It would help to know how big these rocks are. You cant rototil if you have boulders or huge rocks especially if they are everywhere. The rocks will damage the blades of the rototiller. Grass doesnt grow on rocks but ground covers will grow and cover up the rocks. You might want to incorporate ground covers such as vinca, irish moss, etc. into your yard and seed for grass where you find no rocks. Go on the interent to some of the big companies like Springhill, Gurney, etc and get their catalogs. Lawns look great when ground covers are incorporated. Vinca is particularly great because it covers alot of ground, grows over rocks, and has a beautiful purple bloom. The leaves are attractive and the plant requires little maintenance once it is established.

I have a lot of rocks also. What I did was loosen my soil about 2 inches. I pulled all the rocks I could ( they made a nice habitat for lizards). Then I sprinkled my seed and covered it with bulk gardeners soil. You can put bricks or some such around any rocks that are to big to move, fill with soil and plant with alyssum, nasturtium or something that will crawl over or cover the rocks. Maybe it is not exactly what you wanted but it hides the rocks. By the way, if you get a lot of ground freezing, it will push up new rock every year.

Why do you "need" grass? Turf grass (lawn) consumes more time and resources than virtually any other ground cover. People plant lawns because everyone else does, then they spend their time and money spreading chemicals and water to make it grow better, so they can mow it more often, resulting in chemical pollution of our water supply (fertilizing and weed control), noise and air pollution (mowing), and a waste of time that could be put to much better use. How about some wildflowers or other more natural planting? Good for the environment and good for the soul.

Your best bet would be to bring in some good top soil and fertilize. Then find out what kinds of grass grow best in your area. Other than that, you can find ground cover that will grow in rock areas that stay close to the ground and can even be walked on and not die.

Need more info, Do you have a slope in your yard? My front yard had grass the first year I moved in but the following year the top soil eroded and left me with red clay soil. I ended up terracing my yard using rocks/boulders and making flower beds. The rocks prevented the soil from eroding and I conditioned my soil with compost, peat moss, etc. Good luck

I do believe rocks will surface over time. However, it sounds like yours happened suddenly? May want to rotatill it all to pull what you can...and then roll it back down add some good topsoil to the top and seed it.
