To be "Bonded" means they pay to access to a chunk of cash.
(Bail Bonds work the same way you bay to access to big chunk of cash you hopefully won't need))

License and Insurance are different despite what the other answerer's are saying.

If they were to oh, DESTROY your HOUSE... you could sue them.

Some people wont do business with a plumber or electrician unless they are bonded...just to feel safe.. How would you feel if someone destroyed your house and you went to sue them and they had nothing to take?

Most of the other answers are incorrect. BONDED does not mean licensed or insured. In fact, in California contractors are not permitted to advertise the fact they are bonded as it can be misleading. Licensed and insured are separate items. In California a contractor can not receive or renew his license until his bonding is in place.

BONDING actually is like assurance; if something goes wrong or the contractor abandons the project, the bonding company will see that things are put right.

A bond is a piece of paper a contractor has to purchase for 100.00 in each county he works in. It in laymens terms says i will do the best work i can do at a fair cost and not above the full going rate of the local area

Being bonded, as a contractor, is like having the insurance or backup to cover any big mistakes they make while providing a service to you, the customer.
