I have heard never (from ordinary folk who have them) and every 4 years or so from people in the industry. We are pretty careful about what we put in it, but I heard that the solids can back up and ruin the leach field if we let it go too long.

Any tips?

As a rule of thumb, two years is an appropiate interval between cleanings. It is also a good idea to use a good septic tank cleaner like RID between pumpings. This introduces beneficial bacteria into your septic system that will digest and break down alot of the solids to help keep your system from backing up. I hope this information is helpful to you. Have a nice day.

I have a family of 5 which means laundry every day and dishwasher everyday not to mention showers. You can have it pumped and it will be full within a day (with liquid). It is the solids you need to watch. I have mine pumped every other year and the last time I had it pumped the guy told me my system is woking excellent and it looked good. I wouldn't go longer than 4 years, you might be asking for trouble.

You should have your septic tank cleaned every year. And it is true that the solids will build up in your lines. And the only way to fix your lines is to have new ones put in. My father has cleaned and repaired septic systems for over 30 years.
