Every so often, our water will quit working. We have a well and sometimes it will come back on, on it's own but most of the time my husband has to climb down and try to fix it. Before, what he did was take sandpaper to the terminals on the pressure switch and that usually helped. We recently replaced the switch and it hadn't done it for a while. Now, all of a sudden, it quit working again. What do you think we can do to make it stop doing this?

My mom has been unemployed for a few years and she has been steadily collecting and recycling cans and bottles to keep ends meet. She keeps bags of them in the back yard and now some committee has sneaked around and took pictures and slapped her with a fine since this is the 2nd time. I have to figure out ways to help her keep her trash out of sight until she could sell them. I am thinking at getting some trash containers with lids for her, but those city committee could be real difficult and I am not sure if that'd be good enough. Does anyone got suggestions or ideas?

I'm floating about 800 sq ft of bamboo over concrete. I have the entire area cleared of all previous flooring and fairly smooth. Now I'm trying to make sure it's flat, but I'm not really sure exactly how to do this.I've read the "string method" but I'm not really sure how to find the high spot across such a wide area (about 30'x25'). The room has a closet and a hallway too (i.e. it's not just square). I've also read about using a straight edge (like a 2x4), but when looking for gaps in 16ths of an inch, it seems a piece of 2x4 is not exact enough, even if I have a fairly "straight" piece of wood.
Other details: I tested for moisture using the plastic taped to the floor method and that seemed ok. The slab is about 25 years old and I live in a dry atmosphere (San Diego), so I think I'm ok with moisture and plan to use a 2in1 moisture barrier/foam padding.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated as I'm eager to start laying the flooring but don't want to skimp on the prep work. Help!

After many months of procrastination, I've finally decided that I am going to get me a hand drill for minor repairs around the house. now I am not a handyman and have no plans for any major renovation. The only upcoming project is drilling my house numbers into a concrete wall.

Could someone give me advise on what features / spec do I need to look for when trying to buy one? Cost is a concern and I do not need a top-of-the-line model with tons of feature I will never use.

My older mobile home has a hard wired smoke detector that needs replacing. I've lived in the home for 6 years now & I don't have a clue as to when it was installed. Will I be able to find another hardwired model? Is it better to switch to battery operated? If I find a hardwired model, should I do this change myself or let a handyman with electrical experience install a hardwired detector?

because it seems like all my neighbors all plant the same evergreen shrubs for foundation plants and same evergreen trees for their beds directly in front of house (not sure what you call the use as)
. Hollies, Yews, Boxwoods, Hemlock, Juniper, Arborvitae, Spruce, Etc.

I think they look nice, it is just that everybody has ththe same things planted in the beds directly in front of their house (all evergreens).

What about planting deciduous things like Stewartia or Birch or Cherries, Amur Maple, Paper Bark Maple, etc. to get a different look ?!

They build their nests inside the pipes and get stuck inside the fans in my bathrooms and hallway. Occasionally, some get out and fly around my house. My husband is highly allergic so he has to leave the room while I chase them and kill them. They are going in through the tops of the pipes on my roof and building their nests, and this happens every year. What can I do to keep them form getting in the pipes? I want to cover the pipes with breathable material but I need some ideas. Anyone recommend anything? Thanks!
