your taking on a big job. yes you will have to rent a sander. please make sure you look for one that is NOT an orbital sander. the new ones on the market are much easier to use, have stabilizers in them and will vacume up as it works. you still will have a lot of dust but this keeps it down. an orbital sander takes a knack to use. many people have a difficult time with them. and boy if you let one go it could cause a lot of damage to floor and to YOU! check to see if there is a mill or wood flooring place in the area. they will have the correct products for you.

Is it real wood? If not you could do more damage. If it is real wood, you can rent a drum sander. If it is not peeling, splintering, or has large gouges in it, just re varnish it. Check with your hardware store to see what could be done. If you have a piece of scrap around take it with you. If you wind up putting down a new floor, order enough so latter on down the road, if something gos bad, you have something to replace it with.

Good Day
Rent a floor sander and get the proper sand paper. Sometimes it pays to have it done ,or help, by someone who has done it before. Good Luck.

Find a equiment rental place in your yellow pages. They'll probably have a floor sander.
