http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=13519&langId=-1&catalogId=10103&storeId=12 I'd have to sand away the laquer and then stain it right? Is this an easy task or at least achievable?

Yes... you have to get rid of the laquer first. It's achievable but lots of work for nothing when you can go to Home Depot and buy one almost exactly like it for even less..... and without the laquer on it... so it's just one step to stain it....

I would suggest using a stripper first. Trying to just sand off the finish will take too long and might be uneven. Any home center will have refinishing kits with full instructions on how to strip, sand, stain and refinish your piece. It is not hard but can be time consuming

? Do you have the bench or are you going to get the bench? If you do not already have the bench I would keep on looking for one that has the finish you want or an unfinished piece if you really want to stain and finish something.

In part I have to agree with number 1, though I can't know if Diva is the reality,,,NO OFFENSE.

I won't look at the link, but I feel confident you can find similar suitable, and RAW or already finished to suit you.

Beyond that there are stains, more opaque than absorbtion types.
