in 2002 the old owners of our house had a linoleum floor put down by professionals. it's the linoleum square type, not sure exactly what they are, it's supposed to look "vintage". the old owners told me it's put over 2 1/4" heart of pine floors. (yeah, why??) we'd like to see if we can salvage the wood floors underneath. help!?! (we would prefer to do the work ourselves...)

Last night, there was a bad smell -- sweet burnt plastic with a hint of Lemon Pledge -- and I figured it came from the heater that was plugged in to that extension cord.

And switched heaters, running it off the same now-burnt and non-functional cord.

The smell persisted, and the cord worked for several more hours. (It had not only a heater but a small clock plugged in to it.) We did blow a fuse today, and still had no idea it of the extension cord's problems...

What on earth happened? It was plugged in in an area not readily visible. I am, yes, lucky to've not burnt my house down. I am also curious...

I have several dozen towering pines in my yard and love them but due to the acidity of the soil and the filtered out sunlight, I can't even get a lawn to grow. Are there any species of flora and or vegetables that would thrive in these conditions? Have you had any success with them?

I partically insulated the walls and the wall is wet under the insulation. I drilled holes through the top plate for ventilation to help Any ideas to stop this? I only have typar as a exterior covering right now. Is some condensation normal?

What kind of paint do I use? Do I use a paint brush or a roller (or neither)? What kind of sealer, if any, do I use? Do I sand it first? Does anyone know of a good "how to" book for this sort of thing?

I have a small electric furnace made by rheem, the heat does not come on. Ealier if you bring the temperature slider back a forth a few time, it would run normal. Now that doesn't work. This to me sounds like a relay gone bad, or maybe a time delay. Any help would be appreciated. By the way I am quite knowledgeable about safely work with 210 V and almost have a mechanical engineering degree, so I have an idea how this thing works just need a start point for diagnosis. Also I have checked the thermostat settings and it funtionality with a multimeter. As I am a student I cannot afford a service call.

I thought the unit had a battery that I could charge, but it doesn't seem that way. Am I missing something? It's a Toro 522 Power Throw. Thanks in advance for any insights.

It is getting cold now and I was wondering which is more cost efficient, to run the gas fireplace or to run the gas heater? The fireplace works good if you are right by it, but it doesn't warm the whole house like the heater does. I like using the fireplace when I am watching t.v by it, and then when I go to bed I run the heater. But if it costs less, I could just be running the heater instead the whole time.

I clean my toilet once a week. After I clean it, no problem it's fine. But it never fails...about a day or so later, it smells like urine again--just like it would if I let it go over a week before being cleaned again. Do you know of any products that will take the smells away?

i am thinking of re-decorating my flat again. one of the bedrooms was repainted late last year, but as the room is going to be my daughter's i want to completely change the colour. eg its a creamy beige, but want to paint it a pale pink. the second bedroom needs repainting, although it was done a year or two ago. eg its a creamy beige colour sort of too, but want to paint it blue for my son. both bedroom walls are in good condition. smooth surfaces etc. what sort of paint should i use. eg vinyl silk, emulsion etc and how many coats?

i also want to paint my small bathroom and kitchen, and perhaps later my living room. the living room is fairly new in the way of paint. eg a few years ago, but the other two above haven't been done for a long time. what sort of paint is best for these rooms, and should a paint brush or small roller be used for small parts/crevices?

any advice would be appreciated!!
