We have a small (long and narrow) area, with the family area on one end, and the kitchen on the other. The family area has a cherry entertainment unit built into the wall. On the other end, our kitchen cabinets are standard oak. The floor is light beech Pergo. Walls are off-white.

Do we:
- leave the kitchen cabinets as is, and put some decorative elements (e.g. vases or flowers) in "cherry" colors to somehow balance with the big block of cherry wood on the other side of the room?
- change the kitchen cabinets to match the cherry entertainment unit (our kitchen is small with one window -- cherry might be too dark and make the space seem smaller?)
- change the kitchen cabinets to match the light beech floor?
- paint the kitchen cabinets to white, light yellow, something close to the cherry, or some other color?
- paint the walls?
- other suggestions?

The new smoke detector code in Michigan, I believe is to have both AC electric with backup battery smoke detectors in every room.

Anyway.. we are having a problem with the smoke detectors that we've just recently installed:...

Are they supposed to beep like every 5 mins or is this just some kind of phase?

Is this fixable, if so... how?

Also, could someone please get me a link to Michigan codes for smoke detectors?

I have three 120 year old walnut carved wood legs and a brand new carved leg made from pine. The pine- though stained twice already with a walnut oil based stain is not near dark enough to match the genuine antique legs that at their darkest points are near black. How can I reach this efect?

What are some SPECIFIC ways to get pine to match antique walnut. I live in a rural area and do not have any specialty stores (so bizarre extremely hard to find items are really not an answer for this question).

Are there alternative products to give that balck appearance? Ist there a homemade stain? Could I use something like black show polish to give the new piece the apperance of old or even thinned down black oil paint used like a stain?

We are undergoing a major renovation at our home. Our contractor had put the walls up but not a roof yet. We had very heavy rainfall that night and water was streaming down our kitchen, laundry, and bathroom walls. Nevertheless, we are dealing with mold now because of the water damage. Our contractor said he cannot do anything about it until we get to the drywall stage which could be another few weeks because of all the inspections required before we get to that point. I'm really scared to even go in the bathroom for fear my 9 month old daughter will get sick. Our contractor admitted it was his fault and that he will fix it. He wants to put bleach on it and KILZ? over it. I don't think that is going to fix the mold problem. What is the BEST way to get rid of the mold problem for good? Thank you.

My bathroom door is locked from inside and is not opening. The lock is push and turn type. Looking from outside, there are just 2 screws. I haven't yet tried removing those screws. I am living in a rental house. The house is very old and I can feel the cold air coming in through the window sills. Our PG & E bill goes over $300 each month in winter. I can't afford paying that much and I can't replace the windows, since I am renting. I need to find a different way to keep my family warm through the winter. We tried the electric space heathers in each room. Now the PG & E bill goes still over $300 because of the space heathers. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've checked ebay, all the major hardware stores, on-line shopping searches, etc. Every search delivers only drywall tools and accessories. I would like to be able to shop for drywall on-line.

When I bought the home and had it built 3 years ago the builder said there was a well behind the house but the water was contaminated and the city I live in get its water from canals. Last year they starting drilling 24/7 making tons of noise and my wife and I had to sleep with earplugs it was so bad. I called the city they said to call the water company they said it is a good well and a source of water for the city and there was nothing I could do. Ive even called the police for noise complaints but to no avail. the workers stopped for 6 months and we thought it was finally over and now there back working in this well installing pumps and making noise from 7am to 7pm every day and we get no peace and quiet. Is there an attorney or somebody out there the knows what I can do, this well is literally 40 to 50 feet from my house and these diesel rigs shake my house and the exhaust fumes prevent me from even going outside. Can I fight this and win? I dont want to move, am I just screwed?

We go out quite a bit so need heating that can warm up rooms in half an hour. We are worried that underfloor heating isn't sufficient and that we would need radiators or extra heaters in addition.
