It is not always an internal compressor problem so do not assume the compressor is bad. Attached to the compressor pins directly or externally from the pins is a current relay. This relay could be bad. They are inexpensive and worth the try replacing before you buy another fridge. It is not stuck in the defrost mode. If it was, the fans would not be running. Almost all home refrigeration units use current relays rather than capacitors. For your kknowledge, the current relays purpose is to allow the internal start winding to be in the circuit during start up and takes the start winding out of the loop once the proper run current is sensed, hence the name current relay. Refrigerators don't last like they used to! Mine just quit after 6 years and it was a high quality one. I was lucky, it turned out to be the defrost thermostat, so it wasn't too expensive to fix. And it doesn't have to be your compressor. It could be the defrost thermostat or defrost timer, which are used to trigger the compressor. If they fail in the right way, they will not start up the compressor. Hope that is the case -- compressor repair is EXPENSIVE if it is not still under warranty.

Could be the compressor or the thermostat or the relay.
