How do you know you when you have used enough oakum to seal a lead caulked drain joint for a 4 inch pipe? Do you tamper it down with a tool? Anything else I should know about using oakum?

Obviously, you are supposed to use lead to seal a lead caulked drain joint but I am hesitant to use lead due to concerns with lead poisoning. Is there an alternative to using lead? The guy at the plumbing store recomended sealing the joint with epoxy. Is this a good solid alternative?

Just moved into a house built in the 30's that has a concrete goldfish pond with brick walls. I like the idea of having a goldfish pond, but it is extremely gross and I would guess that it hasn't been used in 20 years or more. It simply collects rain water and looks like it holds sludge most of the time.

If there was some neat, fairly easy way to get it back in good shape, I might try fish once it warms back up. Otherwise, I may fill it with soil and use it as some sort of garden.

Suggestions, Ideas, etc......

Has anyone ever done this? I don't want to ruin my humidifier (or the filter) but I feel like it would be nice to add a pleasant smell.

I seem to always get them dirty at the office (not even doing physical labor) and it seems taking them to the dry cleaner all the time would be extravagant. I guess this also is a question of basic maintenance for little specs and spots you get on them during the day or week, like salad dressing or what have you...

I need to mud a ceiling for a room inside a trailer. We have the materials I guess you would call it but what tools are necessary to complete this project. Also, do I have to go about this a specific way, is there a how-to guide on this project out there somewhere?

If you had to choose one crappy household chore, thats a real hassle, you could get a maid to do, what would it be? For me it would be to wipe down and clean all the kitchen cupboards and appliances. Or clean out the closets!

I have 2 toilets in my house and both of them are flooding to the point it looks like someone left a water hose running on the floor. It's so gross. But the wierd thing is that when someone flushes one toilet both of them flood from the bottom. And it's all fresh water. Not toilet water but the kind you get from the sink. Clean water and we have already snaked all the drains. We have asked several people and they have no clue. And my grandfather it trying to tear down both toilets so we need answers fast because once he starts something you can't even force him to finish it because he's so childish. Anyway will you please help me?! I'm desprate here.

I just drilled a few holes in a bedroom wall to mount a couple of small shelves. I used a stud finder and found two areas to drill into to put the supports for the shelves. I realized afterwards that I was drilling into a wall that has a bathroom on the other side. I'm paranoid that I might have drilled through the pipe. There's no sign that anything happened (the drill bit wasn't wet or anything), but I'm still worried.

Any tips on 1) figuring out whether I did any damage and 2) preventing me from making a similar mistake in the future?
